OK, below is the tiered, list, it's very provisional and for those "vetarans" among you the questions are the same - who is missing? - who is too low? - who is too high? For those new to all this, note that the tiers aren't ordered, so the first fighter listed isn't rated highest among them, he's just the first on the list. The fighters are rated on what the did in the division and achievement trumps h2h. Law of diminishing returns states that this thread will do three pages only! TIER I Miguel Canto, Jimmy Wilde, Pancho Villa, Benny Lynch, Frankie Genaro, Midget Wolgast , Pascal Perez (7) TIER II Pone Kingpetch, Charchai Chionoi, Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, Hiroyuki Ebihara (4) TIER III Rinty Monaghan, Peter Kane, Horacio Accavallo, Jackie Paterson , Sot Chitilada, Masao Oba. (6) TIER IV Tancy Lee, Salvatore Burruni, Betulio Gonzalez, Newsboy Brown, Erbito Salavarria, Roman Gonzalez, Yuri Arbachakov, Yoshio Shirai, , Willie Davies. (9) TIER V Efren Torres, Mark Johnson, Terry Allen, Fidel LaBarba, Santos Laciar (5) TIER VI Fighting Harada, Little Pancho, Black Bill, Chan-Hee Park, Shoji Oguma, Muangchai Kittikasem, Johnny Buff, Percy Jones, Venice Borkhorser. (9) TIER VII Lorenzo Parra, Joe Symonds, Dado Marino, Juan Francisco Estrada, Gabriel Bernal, Brian Viloria, Emile Pladner, Small Montana, Luis Ibarra. (9)
Oh, yeah, ****, thanks Bit, i'm Wilde (and his contemporaries) north. No paperweights etc. So Coulon's bantamweight when Wilde's the fly champ.
I always thought Pancho Villa was too highly rated just because he beat Wilde. Interested to see how he ends up ranking here.
This list assumes that they fought as flyweights, and not as straweights/junior flyweights, right? So, no Finito Lopez or Carbajal, I guess. Taking that into consideration here are some guys that might warrant consideration: * Pichit Sithbangprachan (he is undefeated, and the level of comp wasn't that bad) * Nonito Donaire (didn't stay long, but has a couple of terrific results and if you take H2H into consideration he'd probably make the list for sure) * Martin Vargas (maybe the best flyweight not to win a world title)
Honestly, at first glance, most of the guys that have to be on this list are on this list. It may need minor tweaking and to be ordered, but it's a quality first draft.
Why is there such a gap between Tancy Lee and Joe Symonds? They went 1-1 against each other. I know Lee beat Wilde, but wasn't Wilde pretty ill? Am I missing something?
Daisuke Naito is probably worth a look. His nemesis was Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, initially losing to him twice. Following the second defeat, he worked his way back up to another shot against him, a couple of years later, taking the WBC title. He defended several times over a 2-3 year period; holding Wonjongkam to a draw to retain his title, before eventually dropping a decision to class act Koki Kameda. Naito could be considered the only man to have defeated Wonjongkam in his prime, when his own prime had probably sailed past him, by then.
I will not lie, I didn't look into Naito at all; to my relief he didn't quite make it over the barricade but interesting shout.
