He's scheduled to fight Iago Kiladze After making short work of Lenroy Thomas, he's now fighting cruiser weights? Are they testing he's ability against more nimble/ lighter guys? I'm confused man, Joyce impressed me with beating Lewison with just a left jab, and TKO'n lenroy who Allen couldn't beat. This ain't exactly moving him up the ranks 'quickly' as management wants - he's 32
I don't really consider Ivica Bacurin a heavy weight, he's a cruiser. And Whyte was berated for taking longer than usual to put out a cruiser weight/ blown up heavy.
It's not an awful fight at least we get to compare how he does to Kownacki and Hunter who both stopped Kiladze. But you're right in that he doesn't have time to waste, Haye said they wanted a title fight inside 2 years of going pro well it's been almost a year and he's fighting at a low level still. Signing with Haymon hopefully see's Joyce matched up with some of his other heavies. I think Joyce was out priced in the UK market too much money to be made there but in the US where the heavies still make peanuts he might be able to secure the odd decent fighter. Maybe the loser of Kownacki/Martin would be a good next step and then maybe Ortiz as he's said he's willing. If that all happens by summer 2019 then he's in a good position to challenge for a title.
Good point, could be a case of being outbid - they offered Chisora how much to take Joyce, like 60K or something loool? I'd love to see Joyce v Martin next up. Joyce v Ortiz would be very very interesting too albeit dangerous for Joyce.
After the last showing vs Kownacki we at least know Kiladze is game and comes to win. It’s a step from the bums Joyce has been beating recently so no complaints from me.
Fair enough - when I think of Joe Joyce today I see his name being mixed with the top contenders, fighting the top ten, having sparred with all these big names for hundreds of rounds... beating guys that took Dave Allen and Whyte longer to put out... I was expecting more.. I was expecting a better opponent... But hey - if people think this will be worthwhile (given his age) let's see...
It’s not ideal of course but it is a showcase fight it’s his first PBC fight. At Hayemaker he couldn’t attract any names. I expect him to beat this guy then we will see him in there with the Martin vs Kownacki winner, Ugonoh, Washington. You know a top 20-30 guy he has no excuses for stepping up now coz Haymon has a lot of Heavyweights.
Exactly Chisora isn't going to fight anyone even half decent for 60K, Christ even Pulev who can't draw at all is making several times that. Why would Chisora or anyone else with anything to lose risk a loss for 60K? Kownacki got $100K to fight Szpilka that's much more in the price range that Haye can afford to pay for an opponent to fight Joyce. Joyce/Martin would be good but I think Martin beats Kownacki and if that does happen Martin will be looking at a shot vs Wilder not stepping down to fight a novice like Joyce. Martin would need to lose for the Joyce fight to happen I think. Joyce/Ortiz would be very dangerous fight for Joyce no doubt, huge step up in class but he doesn't have the time to waste.
Kiladze recently fought Kownacki and Hunter on televised fights. Joyce is a no name in the states, when he completely demolishes an opponent US boxing fans know and can use it to measure Joyce's level with contenders they know, they will quickly take notice. Just about US exposure and recognition for Joyce's first fight.
Kiladze is a heavyweight. Has been for years. Both of his losses have been at heavy. A promised highlight reel KO is why Kiladze was picked. Plus he has worked with PBC before.
