Liston vs Ingo ( beyond 1 round?)

No, didn't Igno's manager say if they saw Sonny Liston, they would run the other way on the street? Igno was petrified of Liston and doesn't have the size, or the durability, or the footspeed of a Mahen type to stay away from him.

Yeah it was Jim Wicks, Coopers manager. Saying it as it is isn't he, Cooper wouldn't of had to worry about cuts in this one !

 

i see. I think you are right. I am getting back into boxing after having been away for a few years, so my memory is a bit foggy.

Nonetheless, i am sure Igno had offers to fight Liston and avoided it. i can't see how he makes it out of a round

 

Hard to see him there after two rounds isn't it. Even if Ingo lands his Bingo, that'll turn Liston into beast mode like in the Williams fight. Cleveland landed a monster shot on Sonny and that's where the end started for him, Liston upped his onslaught

 

Ingo did have a hard, right hand that Liston would have to watch out for.

 

Ingo had a lot of holes in his fight game so I think Sonny was the better fighter & would win this fight by KO, that being said I also think Ingo would have been the hardest puncher that Sonny would have faced. Ingo did KO Eddie Machen in one and Machen fought a good 12 with Liston & drew with Big Cat. Ingo also KO'd Patterson & Cooper so would have been interesting to see even for a few rounds

 

Well, Liston didn't exactly "crush" Eddie Machen ... unless winning a 12-round decision is "crushing" someone.

Ingo had crushed Patterson, flooring him seven times. Ingo had crushed Machen in two minutes. And Ingo had crushed Henry Cooper. So Ingo was no slouch.

I see Johansson-Liston in 1960 like Foreman-Lyle. I could see Johansson going down a couple times. I could see Liston going down face first like Foreman against Lyle/and Liston did against Leotis Martin.

Of course, I could see it going longer than one round. Nobody ever stopped Johansson in a round (can't say the same about Liston).

I think it would've been great. An all-time classic slugfest.

When Ingo got you hurt, he would let loose with both hands. He was a good finisher.

It's too bad we never saw it.

Pick'em fight.

(Side note: That had to have been the worst referee ever. He lets Ingo tee off on the corner - worse than Cooney-Norton. And he actually counts as Machen is being tended to on the deck after the final knockdown.)

Also, I don't think Johansson would've had any problems beating Cleveland Williams, Roy Harris or Zora Folley before or in 1960.

Johansson certainly didn't have any trouble beating Machen, or Cooper or Patterson (the first time). Harris, Folley and Williams weren't any better than those guys.

 

Hard to land it though when your running for Your life. He'd be standing behind the referee.

First round knockouts are actually fairly rare at world level, even when the match up facilitates it.

I don't think that I would ever bet money on such an outcome.

 

I think that was Henry Cooper that said he would go walk on the other side of the street.
