Evgeny Romanov is being kept away strategically away from the top guys

Yes he knocked out the Deontay Wilder we see today didn’t he?

 

He’s very good, but is already pretty a fully developed fighter, and at his age I doubt he’s gonna improve a whole lot. He’ll have to deal with being very physically ordinary compared to most of the other top prospects. He can probably get into the top ten he steps up now, but I wouldn’t count on it in a few years.

 

When was that? 10 years ago? 12?

 

What makes you think he is being held back or protected?

If he's being avoided, it has little to do with his skills. Because they are textbook ordinary. It's like saying Henry Tillman was avoided because he beat Tyson in the ams. A HW unification fight is not something to mess up over a no name, unless it's a mandatory that can't be avoided.

Amateur boxing accolades do not make a pro challenger worthy.

 

This is nonsens. A solid amateur background is important and it's a clear sign how far they can go at a pro BUT it's completly utter bs to say because he knocked down / out Wilder as an amateur +10 years ago he will do the same as a pro or is a potential world title holder.

Romanov looks promising but he needs to step up and probably change his promotion team going to the US like Joyce did couple of months ago. Joyce is a good comparison as he isn't that young anymore and needs to step up soon or he will lose his prime time with fighting bums in the UK.

 

Would you pick him over Fury Povetkin or Usyk though? Probably not.

 

And yet here he is, about to take part in one of the biggest fights of the year.
