This bout was awful, Ali had nothing left but an iron chin, his speed was gone and his body looked old, none of the people at that time seemed to notice though. Which heavyweight title bouts were worse than this bout?

I've never realised it was all that highly rated .
So how can it be overrated ?
There have been lots of title bouts worse.
Your title and comments are a little contradictory ?
It wasn't a great fight but was competitive and I've seen far worse.
Ali was in huge decline but his legend prevented people from seeing that.

I was talking about the commentator Reg Gutteridge (rip) saying how amazing Ali was doing well vs Shavers, the only thing great in that fight was Ali`s chin.

Thats what made it amazing. Everyone knew it was only a matter of time before ali retired. His own doctor quit despite the paydays after this fight because he told team ali it was time to pack it in and they didnt listen. So its amazing a guy whod been fighting since he was a teen in the amateurs could pull off a win against such a brutal puncher evej though he just had his epic war with frazier and was in his mid 30's.

I dont know where youre getting this notion this fight was "overrated" tho. I dont remember seeing anyone listing it as one of alis top 5 performances or as one of the top 10 or even 20 best HW title fights.

To answer your question, i think fury vs klitschko is very overrated. There was hardly any action, and if u look at actual punch stats the numbers are close. People act like fury won every single round and danced circles around him.

The holyfield vs bowe trilogy is overrated. The first fight was amazing but the 2nd fight lacked action and was a very methodical, tactical fight. 3rd fight holyfield was sick, past his prime, and he looked like a grandpa who forgot his meds and got stopped. People rate the whole trilogy based on the 1st fight.

It is interesting if one emotionally checks out to see Ali’s ability drop in specific fights.

    Manila was a big one.

He lost but was still competitive at Yankee Stadium.

After this one he dropped again.

The funny thing was he was better in the first Spinks fight than the second. It was Spinks who was so much worse.

He wasn't peak anymore but he wasn't terrible.....on the commentstor...it's his job to sell the fight no doubt he saw Ali's decline but unlike Cosell did he still sold the drama

I remember how how completely chaotic Spinks corner was for the second fight. He had obtained a huge entourage after the first fight. In contrast Muhammad Ali‘s corner was completely chaotic in the first fight with Angelo Dundee screaming at Bundni BRown to shut up. Ali as well told BROWN to shut up. However, in the second flight they were quiet relatively and organized. Ali fought a boring but effective fight tying Spinks up constantly. It was obvious to everyone that it was time for him to retire.

As bad as the fight was the worst thing had to be Howard Cosellsigning far too much of Bob Dylan’s “forever young” in the waiting moments of the fight.

Agreed. Ali trained harder for he rematch but his skills and timing were actually worse .. he was on a serious downward slide .. however Spinks did nt train at all, was terribly unfocused and it was actually amazing was able to go 15 rounds actually trying .. Cosell was a icon who added drama to an even but was often terrible as a commentator and got much worse with age , losing his job to his ego.

Scott LeDoux holds a special place for knocking off Cosell’s toupee exceeded only Randall Tex Cobb who inspired Costello to quit boxing commentary.

He was an absolute homer in for a guy that was supposed to “tell it like it is” it was more about who he wanted to win. He would adopt a take and regardless of its accuracy and run it into the ground. The stories of how he would treat his broadcast partners, not letting them speak out of his insecurity are legion.

What do you think of Ali`s reflexes in this fight?! He was getting punched all over the place by a fighter that was slower than Liston! There has been evidence discovered that it was this fight that scars was found on Ali`s brain, that`s how many power punches he took. Ali`s speech after this fight in interviews was a lot slower.

Mayweather Pacquiao gets my vote for most overrated five. It was five years to live with an injured Pacquiao and they called fight of the century?!
