Good post. Yeah Evander was a cruiser but he was a great heavyweight as you say. It's like saying Duran was just a light weight or Sugar Ray just a welter.

And yeah Bowe smashed Hide. Yes Hide had some success early, even hurt Bowe badly according to Bowe, but once he landed on Hide he bounced him off that canvas like basketball. The term "struggled" can be deceiving any fighter than doesn't dominate for every minute of every round could be said to have "struggled."

 

I don't think a fight with Lennox was ever viable for Wlad.

They did underachieve.

Bowe due to a lack of discipline, and Vitali due to an abundance of injuries.

I've always been a big fan of Vitali.

I'll always rate him higher than Wlad on a H2H basis.

That last line is brilliant.

 

I'm not sure he'd have destroyed him.

It would have been interesting.

If it was a young version of Wlad, he'd have had more confidence than the older, more cautious version that Manny had.

 

I stayed up to watch the replay of the Hide fight when I was about 15.

I'll never forget it.

Wlad not only had such a long reign, he also cleaned the division out, very thoroughly.


Not only did he win every fight for so long, he won —almost all—- of them very decisively

 

Depends how you word it - if you include Bowes win over Holy then that one win trumps anything wlad did or could acheive. But that was a title win not a defence.

Wlad has never come even close to one elite/HoF/ATG win such as Holy. Even the relatively lowly Michael Dokes is better than Wlads best defence.

If you dont include Holy then wlad's wins on longevity. Bowe just didnt have mindset for longevity, Wlad did but lacked Bowes H2H ability.

This is just for titles, not entire resume. If you throw in whole resume its a different story.

 

wlad faced some middling and retired hitters and DID get multiple stoppage losses.

 

if wlad hadnt his whole resume, but knocked out prime larry holmes, how would you rate Wlad? above or below Bowe?

 

Longevity and dominance over unfulfilled potential and inconsitent spells of greatness.

Bowe has the better wins of course but Wlad was a long reigning champion.
