Ha, that actually might make chess almost watchable. "OMG what is this idiot doing, he's gonna get his queen taken!" "Holy ****, the other muppet has just completely missed the chance to take the queen, where do they find these morons?" Well I say almost watchable.
"Pound for Pound" doesn't even make sense. Size, specifically height/reach are far more important factors than weight. Without even taking into account the loss of speed and footwork etc from gaining the weight, a HW Lomachenko would be too small to even reach Fury's chin without a ladder. It's simply a marketing tool to sell fights involving smaller guys.
Totally agree I remember when Wlad was rated PFP. What it should mean is how guys like Crawford,Lomo can move up in weight just to get challenged and still be the favourite to win, another criteria should be how dominant a guy is or rather how easy they make it look be it looking flash or knocking everyone out. Personally I don’t see how winning close twelve rounders makes one PFP but Canelo has made a name for it and is rated PFP. Lol you’re right it don’t make sense
Resume can be somewhat unfair as some of the best can get avoided and in Crawfords case involved in a weak division but imo Crawfords that good that he demands to be PFP as does Lomo. Maybe age should be a factor and by that I mean someone like Rigondeaux who in his pomp was avoided, won easy and was acknowledged as PFP only his recent loss to a bigger younger guy has seen him forgotten so maybe it’d of been better to take him off the list a while ago to avoid any losses late in his career to tarnish his past kind of thing.
Canelo is a perfect example of the "P4P list is US boxing Propaganda" point I made earlier. He's fought 3 undefeated fighters. Mayweather, Trout and Liam Smith. He got schooled against Floyd. Really only drew against Trout. Beat Liam Smith, who at very best is fringe World level. Add the fact that virtually everybody had him losing to GGG, and the Lara fight was even more 50/50 than Trout, how on earth is this guy P4P? Mayweather, GGG, Trout and Lara could all have the letter L next to their names on Canelo's record. Canelo is P4P top 10 for beating Liam Smith! Joshua's win over Klitschko/Parker/Whyte is better than Liam Smith. And here's one that will shock most, Wilder's win over Ortiz is better than beating Smith too!
Oh for sure, personally I never saw Lara winning it and had Canelo winning by a round or draw at the worst but a loss would of been harsh. Floyd gets swept under the carpet as he was young but as a comparison Maidana who was never PFP took Floyd close twice as appose to Canelo who never won a single round. Golovkin widely accepted should of got the nod as some don’t understand the difference between competitive and close,Canelo was competitive but never did enough to win more than five rounds. Trout was close but a win for Canelo and many reckon Cotto was closer than the cards. Not many PFP guys with a record like that and with him it’s not his skill but his lack of power and an engine.
So what you have compiled here is ranking your opinion of "Fighter of the Year" for each year. Not exactly some revolutionary thought or outcome.
The thing is, if you're 'P4P' you have to be dominating guys at your own weight level.....Or at least be convincing. He didn't show against Trout/Lara that he was levels above them, they were hugely competitive. Longevity also comes into it too. But with regards to that i'm talking about Wladimir Klitschko, rather than Deontay Wilder.
"And in the ****** division, white has responded to black's threatening his king by hiding it up his ass. We may have a new gambit."
Don't you think there is some correlation between fighter of the year and pound for pound? A lot of pound for pound lists are extrapolations of who's been fighter of the year in the past, who came close, and who's likely to get the honor in the future marked out to ten places. Let's just look at who Ring called fighter of the year. 2010 Sergio Martinez 2011 Andre Ward 2012 Juan Manuel Marquez 2014 Sergey Kovalev 2017 Vasyl Lomachenko These are p4p names. In the 2000s it's Pacquiao, Mayweather, Hopkins, Trinidad, etc.
It tends to be a key to their promotional value. Mayweather and Pacquiao leveraged their p4p status into hundreds of millions of dollars. That and unbeaten records sells a lot of tickets and ppvs.
