De La Hoya vs Arguello who would have won (their primes) at 140 or lower?

Arguello, in a close fight, he was greater boxer of the two without a doubt.

 

At 130 - Arguello
At 135 - Arguello (close)
At 140 - De La Hoya

De La Hoya was still pretty green at 130 so I'd pick Arguello definitely.

By 140, DLH was at his peak. It's a shame he didn't stick around there longer but there were bigger fights waiting up at welterweight.

135 is the really intriguing one. Arguello wasn't at his peak at lightweight but still tremendous. DLH was a really big puncher there - he just didn't stick around for a long time. I give the edge to Arguello here, but not by much.

 

Since DLH has lost every big fight, I think nothing changes here. Arguello by MD. & UD at 130, 135.

DLH clearly the bigger man.

Arguello started out as a featherweight (126#), then superfeather (130#) for quite a while before moving up to LW.

DLH started as junior LW which I suppose is the same as superfeather, but he quickly moved up to the higher weights.

So DLH at 130 would be very young or if older, he would have to subject himself to a starvation diet that would weaken him.

 

I think the DLH at LW that beat JCC vs ETM at LW that beat Mancini would've been the most competitive versions. Both guys about 5'10, about an inch difference in reach & both have pretty good chins, ETM a great one.

Oscar is not going to like that left hook to the breadbasket. He'd have alligator arms pretty quick in there against this guy. and sooner or later that straight right hand is coming down the pipe to finish things. I loved the way Arguello would patiently set that missile up. He'd do it against Oscar as well & the second half of a bout is going to be very difficult for DLH when he slows down and drops those hands. A sharpshooter & finisher like Alexis does not require much of a window to capitalize on.

DLH a completely different fighter after like the 8th round & I always thought was a guy that benefitted quite a bit with the 12 round rule. I think lots of the proven 15 round guys have him in lots of trouble.

 

Oscar takes this rather easily imo. Oscar was bigger, much faster and had similar power. stylewise, Oscar Always loved Fighting the orthodox/straight up type of fighters (like Trinidad)……….and arguello fit that bill. Oscar by wide UD.

 

I'll pick de LA hoya, he was a monster at LW and KO'd some sturdy champions.
Against Mancini, arguelo struggled a bit with the youth n speed, though he caught up n KO'd Mancini later in a 15 r fight but in a 12 r fight I'll pick de LA hoya.
