I don’t care where Tony Bellew is from, it could be from the 25th century for me. Joe Louis decimates him.
As an old guy I can tell you without a doubt...things were better in the old days. EVERY old guy will say the same thing. It's ALWAYS been better in days past.
Joe wasn't just strong, but also economical with his output. He throws when there is an opening. Solid foundation underneath him. Joe Louis by KO.
So in other words, we shouldn't really read too much into the opinion of oldtimers, when they say that today suks?
Each generation believes that its era was close to the top. Boxing historians come from multiple generations. Who's right will depend on the facts, not the attitudes of each generation.
You tell me, FrankinDallas. Here's Jim Corbett trying to show how to throw an "uppercut": This content is protected Here's an actual boxer, 16 year old David Lemieux, showing how to throw an uppercut: This content is protected Pop quiz: How many differences do you see? The jab, obviously.
Well it’s a good thing I’m younger than most of you then. We can throw that argument in the dumpster. I’d consider myself a futurist. Almost everything in life has gotten better. But not everything. Boxing is set up perfectly for posterity due to its ubiquity. It’s not some random ass sport with yards, downs, positions, balls, and wildly abstract rules. It’s a fist fight at the highest level.
Athleticism in the early 20th century? Are you serious? Let's go back to fitness guru Jim Corbett for this one: So what's Jim Corbett's advice about weights? Little pink dumbbells! He'd be right at home in an old ladies' fitness class today. Here's what USA Boxing's official manual says about weights: Looks like they understand that strength is a good thing, unlike Mr. Pink Dumbbells. That's just one example of many. And don't get me started on nutrition.
Corbett does not know how to throw a proper jab. This is not a matter of argument. It is a fact, recorded on film.
Sorry, but you guys are relying entirely on Corbett to make your cases. I agree that the science of nutrition is very far advanced from even 50 years ago (when doctors were recommending cigarettes on TV!) never mind 1895. But you can't tell me that men and women were not athletic before 2018. Jim Thorpe, anyone? Etc etc. And the jab? Take two right handed men, face them off against each other, and what will one of them do with his left hand? Throw a left jab ffs. There is no video available but I'd bet my life saving that Greek Pancrators (sic?) threw jabs at each other.
FrankinDallas asked whether any punches had been invented since 1895, or whether the uppercut had changed since 1918. Don't blame me for answering his misguided question honestly.
