For once a sportsman, a boxer, not producing some pathetic fabricated excuse claiming unintentional consumption, sabotage, contamination etc.

Straight up admitted to the charge, said sorry and takes responsibility. I’m a fan now.

to be fair, how was he going to blame cocaine on anything else other than him sticking it up his own hooter?

It's far easier admitting you were being a bit of a dick for taking a drug.....Rather than admitting to taking something to try and cheat.

Loads of athletes have used the “spiked” or “accidental consumption” excuses for drugs like cocaine.

Yeah that’s a fair point, but still, Benavidez could have tried to deny intentional consumption. By admitting it he risks being stripped of his title and being banned.

That's kewl but how about not doing it under strict testing in the first place?

Besides it being illegal and tied to thousands of murders in the Latino Community, and it being a horrible message to fellow youngsters who look up to him - if he's already on the powder with a little dough and fame at 21, how his career's not gonna hit downward spiral at some point?

Taking money and signing all over the place and doing recreational drugs are bad signs too early. Respect that he owns up to it nonetheless, but without telling him how to live his life, just as a fighters' fan, I hope he matures double fast.

I mean, drug use/addiction draws sympathy. PED use draws anger. No reason he wouldn't accept full responsibility.

I don’t know much about Benavidez’ background but most boxers these days come from underprivileged backgrounds with poor education and tough upbringings. Let’s not be hasty in trying to blame a kid who dabbled in recreational drugs, there could be a plethora of reasons for it. I am solely praising his acceptance and accountability like a man.

He might claim full responsibility, but I'm still waiting for Sulaiman's statement claiming he's innocent and the actual victim.

He had no choice — it's quite expensive and rather useless to give cocaine to cows.

Oh I'm not blaming him which would be hypocritical considering my youth , but the signs still aren't so good with his irresponsible signings and so on. And since he's admitted doing it, I don't see how he'll escape suspension.

Even though Richard Gasquet's excuses were accepted by authorities (kissed a girl who did cocaine ), he still got 3 months suspension in tennis, and considering how rarely boxers perform compared to that sport, I think a year off could teach David what doing it and manning up to it means in terms of consequences.

In other words, admitting to it does not acquit you from the act, recreational drugs are on doping lists for a reason, and it would send a pretty wrong message if he could fight on regardless.

He must be an addict cocaine doesn't stay in your system that long. It's not like weed that stays for a long time.

Or he just got tested at the wrong/right time. That's where the random testing comes in.
