Corrie Sanders was 37 years old. Povetkin is 39 years old. So Povetkin is 2 years older than Corrie Sanders was when he beat Wlad, and is also 2 inches shorter in height and 3 inches in reach.

So there is ABSOLUTELY no reason to believe Corrie Sanders was more past his prime than Povetkin, when he was 2 years younger.

I didn’t know his hideout is on the island. Might take me a while to track down the basement he’s at.

Tyson had already reached the absolute highs of the heavyweight division by the time he was 22, Povetkin has never reached such heights or fame so he is still motivated to win a big title at the age of 39. Once you have achieved something the desire to achieve it again is not the same.

im torn. I like Joshua but I cant stand hearn. Joshua winning means that surely the wilder fight has to happen but povetkin winning would be truly glorious.

That's not a valid excuse! If Mike Tyson was still boxing, then he remains accountable for his losses and failures. If he had achieved everything and then retired, then you'd have a point.

None of this changes the fact that Mike Tyson never had a complete foothold on the heavyweight division and dominated it for multiple years. He lost, DURING his prime against Buster Douglas and simply got exposed and figured out in the end.

And Mike Tyson is just one, of many examples of heavyweights not doing anywhere near as well as Povetkin is doing at such an age. No heavyweight at Povetkin's current age, ever beat an opponent at the caliber of Anthony Joshua with the same size + age + venue disadvantage. Povetkin literally holds no advantage in this fight against Joshua! Not size, not age and not the location of the fight.

A lot of boxers just fight for the money. That’s why Holyfield continued to fight until almost 50.

Furthermore longevity into your late 30s should not be considered the be all and end all in a sports career. The peak years are 20-30. Diego Maradona was completely past it by the time he was 30 whereas Ryan Giggs was able to play at the highest level until his late 30s. No one in their right mind would say Giggs was better than Maradona.

That's still not a valid excuse! Doesn't matter whether he fought for money or not. He fought, and he still lost, multiple times to journeymen / bums. And he has to be held accountable for those losses.

Mike Tyson isn't the only person to have suffered from personal issues / problems. Povetkin also had his own personal problems. Say what you want about him, but at least he's never been KO'ed / stopped multiple times to bums / journeymen level opponents that Mike Tyson was stopped / knocked out by.

Longevity, for a come forward pressure fighter like Povetkin, who ALMOST ALWAYS gives away size, height and reach advantages to his opponents, is UNPRECEDENTED and UNPARALLELED! It's not expected for a come forward pressure fighter to even be successful against lesser opponents like David Price, after reaching late 30's. But here we have Povetkin doing something very few, if any pressure fighter before him has ever done in the heavyweight division. And if he beats Joshua, or is even competitive against Joshua (at this old stage of his career), it'd only further prove how special of a boxer Povetkin is.

You SERIOUSLY CANNOT compare team sports like football to individual sports like boxing. It's not a like for like comparison! Compare individual sports to individual sports. You'd be hard pressed to find athletes, ever winning gold medals, or any medals for that matter, in the Olympics after they reach their late 30's in individual sports like boxing. It just doesn't happen, and for a reason. These sports are not meant for old people at the HIGHEST level.

And even in pro boxing, you won't find too many heavyweights, especially pressure fighters who had anywhere near the success during their late 30's as Povetkin is having in his late 30's currently. We can run down all past heavyweight great champs and none of them, during their late 30's, ever beat an opponent at the caliber of Anthony Joshua with the size and age disadvantage that Povetkin faces against Joshua. It NEVER happened!

Mike Tyson was a superior athlete with limited pure boxing skills and tactical abilities! Which is why, once his speed was gone, and once his main trainers were gone he became unsuccessful! Povetkin is the more skilled boxer with better tactical ability. Which is why, even at such an old age where his speed has declined and where he has changed multiple trainers, he is still doing much better than Mike Tyson was.

    Why stop at Tyson..

Povetkin at 39 is doing better than Joe Louis was at 36, 37 , 38 , 39 .... Is Povetkin more skilled that Louis as well?

Individuals in team sports can be compared. The whole world knows that 31 year old Lionel Messi is a better player than 26-27 year old Neymar, Hazard and Bale. Messi has deteriorated but is still better than these young pretenders.

Athletes are lasting longer at the top now. If you look at men’s tennis (an individual sport) all the winners of grand slams these days are all over 30! No man born after 1988 has won a grand slam title. Twenty years ago a 30 year old tennis player was considered a dinosaur.

I’m rooting for Povetkin tomorrow but to say he has had a better career than Tyson is ridiculous.
