I’ve heard that before. That crossed arm worked well against boxers like Ali, but not against big punchers. Yet he was supposed to be a highly skilled boxer, so wouldn’t you expect him to learn his lesson after the Foreman loss? Try a more conventional defense against the big punchers. Ali was present at Norton’s fight against Foreman, and he was commenting on how he thought Norton would win because of his boxing skills.
Archie Mooore used the cross arm his whole life just fine. Nothing wrong with cross armed style as opposed to any other style
WOW! I don't know where you came up with that crap. Ali consistently trained during his 3 years off. What a bunch of BS on your part.
Here’s Ali talking after the 1st round of the Norton Foreman fight, where he predicts an easy win for Norton because of his superior boxing skills This content is protected And here’s more commentary from Ali after the KO. He doesn’t acknowledge that he was wrong, but he does reveal his strategy for defeating Foreman This content is protected So if Norton was such a good boxer why could he not stick and move like Ali or Jimmy Young?
Shavers and Foreman were two of the hardest punchers ever. Norton didn't understand he needed to approach both fights differently. His chin was solid vs Ali, Quarry, and Holmes. Suspect vs Big puncher, and like I said he fought them all wrong.
That's what I mean. It's not that cross armed defense is better or worse than any other style. Ultimately it comes down to the man utilizing it.
The Shavers fight was really odd. Norton was the bigger guy 225 vs 210 for Shavers, yet he was totally overpowered.
We're in agreement and that's how I meant my comment. You're getting killed with left hooks from Cooney... do something different. Brings me back to the LeDoux-Holmes fight (or was it Tex Cobb?) Holmes was peppering the other guy with his jab until his face was pulped. Howard Cosell was screaming "Wouldn't you put your hands in front of your face if you were getting hit like that?" or something to that effect. Not a bad idea to try to block punches, somehow.
At one point he was over 250lbs.He must have been at least 240 when I saw him give an exhibition after the Foreman fight.
