Teddy Atlas: “Mike Tyson was NOT a great fighter”

So "elite" fighters are typically spooked by guys who aren't very good?

And Holyfield had losses that weren't really close, too. So what?

I find this whole topic dumb.

Mike Tyson was a great fighter. He beat plenty of top champs. He lost a handful of times. He was feared because he was GREAT! He won about 10 times more than he lost. He unified the title and made 10 title defenses by the time he was 23.

Teddy Atlas, on the other hand, got fired by every fighter he's ever worked for. Teddy Atlas' whole rep is based on the fact that he worked with Cus D'Amato and helped train a teenage Mike Tyson. D'Amato kicked him out and dismissed him as Tyson's trainer when Atlas was 26.

Everything else Atlas has done in the nearly 40 years since then have led people to roll their eyes, because he's a clown.

Mike Tyson was so great, Teddy Atlas is STILL known for once having trained a 15-year-old Tyson.

Dave Chappelle once made a joke that he didn't realize how famous Bill Clinton was until Monica Lewinsky became famous herself for giving him a blow job.

Teddy Atlas is Monica Lewinsky.

 

Teddy Atlas sucked Mike Tyson off?

 

Perhaps.

But he did what d'Amato, Jacobs and others couldn't/ wouldn't and that's rightly put Tyson in his place that day he pointed a gun to his head for misbehaving.

Tyson had been arrested 32 times before being 12.

Think about it for a moment.

How does anyone get arrested 32 times ??

Tyson liked to hurt women, by his own words.

His greatness should take into account he voluntarily relinquished his WBC belt rather than face Lewis.

It speaks volumes about his character.

Ted Atlas is a bitter jealous man

 

Quite a few here haven't watched the video it seems or don't get the point he was making.

Basically what he is saying is that anytime tyson came up against adversity he failed. Anytime he was up against it or wasn't the better fighter he looked for a way out or couldn't rise above it, pull out the stops etc.

He admits that he was a great and most of his fights were like exhibitions cos he was so far ahead of his competitors.

Physically he was immense, as a boxer he was excellent however he says mentally he was very week.

 

I disagree, and just sticking to Boxing too. I found the epic first (and subsequent) wars between Morales & Barrera--Leonard going life and death with Duran and Hearns first fights- Ali vs Foreman and Frazier 1+3--Pryor vs Arguello etc.....I could go on and on;...far more entertaining, exhilarating and testimony to my love for the sport than early Tyson blowouts over outclassed opponents. I'll take Holyfield vs Qawi over Tyson vs Marvis Frazier or Bruce Seldon any day. Tyson-Ruddock 2--yeah I can work with that though.

 

It's no secret that Mike's resume is garbage

His prime lasted about 2 years....then after reaching the point in his career where he needed to step up he was out partying not focused you name it.

He never took his best form into a fight with his greatest opponents.

roided up holyfield in the mid 90's? unroided Holyfield would have got stopped by 88 Tyson. Mike was not roided up.

Early 2000's Lennox Lewis? Jesus Mike was shot to pieces.

 

I like Teddy Atlas for the most part but anything Tyson related I pretty much drown out because I know what he's going to say and I don't really believe what he thinks on the subject

I also don't really like when Teddy goes on these huge tirades usually after the guy that he wants to win losses and start screaming robbery I just think it makes him look unprofessional and is a huge turn off 4 people trying to get into the sport and great ammunition for casual sports fans who like to just be little the sport intern turning away more possible viewers

I think in general Teddy seems to understand what's going on in a ring and can have good insight and I like his pre-fight breakdowns but on the other hand when a guy doesn't follow the breakdown that he points out ahead of the fight he usually rides that fighter for the whole fight and scores against them even if the guys doing better it seems he scores points against them for not following the game plan Teddy thinks they should follow

 

As long as d'Amato was alive, sure.

But after that, there's every indication Tyson was drugged up to his eyeballs: he pretty much admitted it to have taken any kind of drugs he could use, even employing a fake manhood to beat the tests.

 

Here is the issue I have with this:

We can sit here and debate Tyson’s boxing record and personal life. A few years back on Friday Night Fights Atlas made a big production out of meeting with Tyson on air and accepting an apology. Anyone remember this? Not even a week later Atlas was back to trashing Tyson. Tyson genuinely wanted to bury the hatchet so to speak and Atlas let it last all of a week out of petty jealousy. Tyson isn’t a saint but Atlas isn’t the man of integrity he tries to make himself out to be. Atlas is a self serving total Fraud. The guy made a living off of driving Tyson to amateur tournaments in a station wagon because Cus was too old for the travel. If you watch all the old videos Cus is on the ring apron giving Tyson all the instructions and Atlas is just holding the pads. Cus was a sick old man and couldn’t do the actual work so Atlas was the one to hold the pads and drive Tyson to the tournaments etc. Everything Atlas has he owes to Cus D’Amato and Mike Tyson.

 

ONce i saw this i knew itd find its way on here.

 

I haven't watched the video. But he didn't look for a way out against Douglas or Lennox.
