The first part of the question is in the title. Based on how you rank fighters all time, does Jack Johnson make your Top 5 HW list?

Second part - IYO, does Johnson rank higher on an all time list based on accomplishments or is he higher on an all time list based on h2h criteria?

Jack Johnson is definitely in the top 5 along with Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, Marciano, and Mike Tyson.

Hard to say on the second question, since Johnson fought almost every type of style and size of opponent, but many of his fights aren't listed on boxrec.

Eddie Futch has Louis,Ali, and Johnson as his top 3 in no order of preference.I don't know where he ranked Marciano and Tyson.

You could make a case for Johnson's resume being second only to Louis and Ali.

It is a shame that there were not rankings through his career, because they would be enlightening.

I personally believe that Jack Johnson was overrated, and I rank him 16th, right below Gene Tunney

No. He was great and is sometimes included in my top 10. However, his reign wasn't much. His performances were irregular in quality. That's if we are going to really nitpick, which when discussing the Top 10 we must.

Louis and Ali are 1 and 2. Lewis and Holmes follow for me. After that you can choose among Foreman, Holyfield, Frazier, Waldo, Tyson and Dempsey. After that comes Johnson's level.

Now, if you are going include societal impact exclusively, he may be #1.

I'll have to put together some kind of ranking.

Something like this, but I'm not really happy with it.
    Teir I
    Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali
    Teir II
    Jack Johnson, Larry Holmes
    Teir III
Lennox Lewis, James J Jeffries, Rocky Marciano
    Teir IV
Evander Holyfeild, Mike Tyson, Jack Dempsey, Wladimir Klitschko, George Foreman
    Teir V
John L Sullivan, Peter Jackson, Jersey Joe Walcott, Ezzard Charles, Joe Frazier

I don't think so, i have him at #13 but you could make a case that he is top 5 based on accomplishments and cultural impact.

Anywhere from 3 to 10 sounds good to me. I currently have him at number 8.
