And now, the obligatory normal post.

Has anybody collected and indexed the various Rocky newspaper articles and clips? I wonder whether @McGrain might be willing to sticky a thread dedicated to reconstructing Marciano's training methods. That might be an area that orthodox and revisionist alike could get behind.

    It's great.
The exaggerated conclusions drawn by the ones who produce the information, ehh, not so much.

I know this thing has veered wildly off topic, and some purists are likely offended ... but thanks, guys; a long, crappy day was just rescued by a few hearty chuckles. We've got a witty bunch here, and humor is often a lifesaver and can come from strange places. Keep it up -

Blueberries actually do have anti aging properties so a fighter like Rocky who started at a pretty late age likely benefited greatly from them.

Found a description of Joe Walcott's training for the Marciano fight, from a reporter who interviewed Walcott and his manager:

From: Oscar Fraley, Sports Parade, Daily Republican, Sept. 4, 1952

"In prepping for the smashing Marciano, Jersey Joe has worked blithely in his own way--on the legs which may have to carry him for 15 rounds. His is a method out of the past--roadwork and more roadwork.

Through the past few weeks he has run four to five miles every dawning--and then walked six to seven more miles every evening. It adds to a total foot slogging of 10 to 15 miles a day, and the legs thus are more than ready."

No objection here, but what would the purpose of this be?

To get a really firm reference point on a 1950s heavyweight who was known for being a hard trainer. It will be handy in future discussions about training differences over time.

From Whitney Martin, Sports Trail, Altoona Tribune, May 21, 1954

"Rocky was talking of this and that, of how well he felt, his five miles of early-morning roadwork over "a nice route I found" and his diet.
"Don't put dry cereal over a raw egg in the morning as I did when you had breakfast with me before the LaStarza fight," he laughed. "Drink egg nog now." [...] We wondered out loud how much Rocky weighed, knowing he had been here on and off for above five months, and already had fought more than 100 rounds.
"Let's see, we'll have an official weigh-in right now," he said. He walked over and stepped on a scale in the corner, and slowly nudged the crossbeam until it balanced. "One ninety-five" he said, and indicating the heavy gear he was wearing. "That means about 190."

"You could step in the ring and fight Friday night, then? He nodded and said: "Yes, I could."

Don't be naive. Compiling more articles won't get anyone here closer to the truth than they already are.

Wlad sparred about 150 rounds for Byrd II, according to an interview he did.

It's still early speculation at this stage, but it's looking like Marciano achieved similar training volumes over much longer periods of time. Without supplements to help him recover, that long-term "monkish" existence may have been necessary to get in the training he needed.
