The thing is, plenty of other people saw Duran with their own eyes and everyone thought he looked great. I just found a bunch of detailed descriptions of his public workouts in New Orleans, and first-hand quotes from Duran and his trainers. They’re all completely consistent and nobody anywhere makes any reference to him looking off or overweight. To the contrary, everyone agrees that he looks sharp and on weight. There are even interviews from around November 14th where he says he’s ready to fight and Brown seems to worry that he might be peaking too soon. There are other articles that talk about him lightening his training load the final week so that he doesn’t burn out. I’ll try to post excerpts this week. I’m more convinced than ever that the stories about Duran‘s weight and Leonard’s strategery are really just another classic boxing myth.

that is his typical excuse when he lost to one of the legends. Yet he then would train for lesser fighters? Makes sense.

Are there any quotes from knowledgeable observers who saw his public workouts, and didn't have any stake in promoting the fight or helping Duran? Those would be the most helpful, IMO.

But why would they? That would just play into Leonard's camp.

It looks similar to me. He always used the same excuse. Who fighters get that sort of privilege?

I’ll have to doublecheck, but the consistent detailed first-hand observations of the various reporters are good enough to me, until someone produces some contemporaneous evidence to the contrary. The utter absence of even the slightest whisperings about Duran’s appearance or conditioning in these articles speaks volumes. Nothing regarding any of the press conferences. Nothing regarding any of his public workouts. Nothing during the back and forth trash talking between Dundee and Arcel. Nothing regarding the weigh-in. Lots of people attended Duran’s open workouts (Leonard’s brother even showed up to one, apparently) and there aren’t any records of any rumors about his conditioning. Nothing.

Instead, by all accounts he looked sharp and on weight, so much so that his trainers reduced his load and worried about him peaking too soon.

Hi everyone, I believe the simple eye test is good enough to show me that Duran wasn’t in same shape in the rematch as he was in Montreal. He had nowhere near the physical definition or zing that he had in the first fight. The big money ruined his desire to train as well as he had in DeJesus 2 and 3 and against Leonard in Montreal.

Then again it’s no excuse whatsoever and Leonard was without doubt the better man in the rematch. Training properly and showing discipline is all part of being pro.

I have always thought that the pundits who believe Ray fought the wrong fight in Montreal are forgetting about how badly hurt he was early in the fight. When you get buzzed that badly and your legs get rubberised it takes a few rounds to get back to normal and by that stage Ray was behind and had absorbed a fair amount of punishment so sticking and moving wasn’t an option.

Carl Froch vs George Groves 1 was similar in that regard. Groves really hurt Froch early and it took “ the Cobra “ at least 4 rounds to recover. Funnily enough just as SRL did Froch won the rematch in convincing style.

    Cheers All.

Well then we just disagree then.
Who gets that privlage? Why Duran of course. He earned it.

Yeah, that’s the conventional wisdom. Curious what you think about the other information I’ve introduced in this thread though.

no he didn't. he didn't beat many greats to say he would be a great if he was in shape. He never knocked out a great fighter.

We all can convince ourselves what we ultimately want to believe. What doesn't lie is the eye test. Look at the physique like I keep saying. Compare photographs from the fights. Durans physique is clearly different.

Study Duran as a lightweight is all I have to say. On top of that name me another lightweight who goes up to middleweight when hes clearly past his prime and gives a prime Hagler all he can handle. Name me one

Hi Kev, as an old cynic I have never taken that much notice of the gossip-hype and misinformation that comes out of training camps be they released by the press or a fighter’s entourage. I prefer to use my own eyes.

I have no truck with Roberto’s excuses or those trotted out by his fans ( despite being a massive fan myself ) in the rematch. Duran had plenty of time to get himself ready for the fight and the fact he wasn’t is his fault alone.

I also believe that Duran peaked in the first fight, unlike SRL who was still improving both technically and physically.

    Cheers mate.
