It's not a status it's a nonsense , if it was say Andre Ward returning after a 3 year absence the word lineal wouldn't even be mentioned , Ward has consistently beaten the best names in his divisions and proved it over a long period of time his name would be enough to walk straight back into a superfight that sells its self and he keeps in shape , Fury is a one hit wonder that became a joke almost immediately after winning one title fight and ballooned up to half a tonne , lineal champion Vs World champion sounds a lot better to the casuals than fat old looking out of shape world champion for 5 minutes Vs world champion , it's a marketing tool and the sad sad thing is the army of Frank Warren puppets that fall hook line and sinker for it
thats just your opinion of it, but the fact remains, it is a status given to "the man who beat the man", no matter how ridiculous you think it may be
I'd be interested to know how many lineal champions exist in the history of boxing throughout all the divisions , quite a few one would imagine only ever heard one fighter give it any relavence tho , ok it's a status but an embarrassingly shitty one for an active undefeated fighter.
i agree with you to some extent, for example, Mikey Garcia is lineal champion at 140, which is ridiculous, but it is what it is. i do think it holds some weight if someone, like Fury, beat the man who was also a unified champ and ruled a division for a decade. This is a list of every lineal champion in history https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lineal_boxing_world_champions
Why are people pretending to be so stupid in this thread? Lennox Lewis is retired 14 years. If Lewis had have come back within in a few years of retiring, absolutely he would've came back as the man to beat. He's now an old man. There's nothing complicated about this. Lowering your intelligence levels to argue and put down Tyson Fury's achievements is embarrassing. I sincerely hope you're all pretending to have no common sense.
Of course it's used to market the guy. Very good marketing too. He was the no.1 heavyweight in the division! Lost all his belts without losing them in the ring and for that reason deserves a better status than "former champion". He remains undefeated. There wouldn't be need to use it otherwise. The embarrassing part is you guys getting so animated about it. As said, he'll either cement it or lose it on December 1st, so sit back and enjoy the ride.
Lineal/Linear - it's all meaningless in today's heavyweight landscape. Tyson has fought two nobodies since he unretired and has looked terrible in the process. He shouldn't currently be ranked in the top 10. This will be underlined when Wilder knocks seven bells out of him. The Man of the division is either Joshua or Wilder at this point. Any claims Fury had disappeared when he failed to honour the rematch, failed a drugs test and retired. Yes he can reverse that by beating Wilder, but it's highly unlikely.
Adonis Stevenson has been lineal LHW champ since 2013, that pretty much sums up the credibility of the "Lineal Champ" in boxing.
Had the chinny robot's team not ducked wilder, and had Fury stayed retired then the winner of AJ/Wilder would have established a new lineage. As it is, Fury and Wilder fight for both the linear and the lineal titles (as well as that WBC bauble) in less than two months.
seriously? how long have you been following boxing - theres a guy called "Lou Di Bella" he's an American promoter/manager/tv exec and a historian of the game - who is a big advocate of the LINEAR title in particular, check any of his recent interviews he'll probably bang on about it.
The gentleman I referenced in my post above who has been involved in boxing for longer than you or I have been following it talks about it again here This content is protected
no. such. thing. as. linear. in. boxing. he means lineal. just google "linear boxing", you won't find one hit
