Oh, I mentioned Mercer and Bruno deserved a re-match before.

I think Lewis won a close one 6-4 over Mercer, but some say draw, and a minority gave it to Mercer. Lewis to me came on late to win it on my scorecard, though Mercer's jab did bust him up and gave Lennox a black eye.

I think Bruno was in the lead, and Lewis in some trouble until he landed a bomb to end it while moving backward with his eyes not exactly on a target. A desperate type of swing and land moment.

Both would have been excellent re-matches.

A difference I suppose is Lewis said he'd re-match Vitali several times and had 16+ million for him. He just balked. End of. I'm not sure if there was talk of a Mercer or Bruno.

Have no illusions, I think Lewis was a top 5 ATG at heavyweight and great fighter past the age of 35.

u sure as hell never even dreamed of mentioning that to anyone until the day vitali got his face ripped off, I can guarantee it.

but after vitali got blitzed to bits, you hit boxrec straight away and ploughed thru it for days trying to alleviate your pain.

vitali was prime, he was around 30 wasnt he, or more? ha at the notion that he was pre-prime.

he was prime and oldlewis ripped him up in less than half time. He was hopelessly outgunned, and it burns u. It should burn you more that vitali didnt step up more than twice.

Was an entertaining fight and I think everyone was pissed when they stopped it...but everyone also understood. I think Vitali wins any rematch at that stage of their careers. Prime wise Lewis wins.

A rematch between Lewis and Bruno would not have been sellable to the UK public

I always provide facts and primary sources to back up my statements ,when asked to do the same you dissapear!

Example? Verified offers of $30,000 that Jack Johnson turned down to fight Jeannette,Langford ,and McVey!
I've been waiting 3 years now for your reply!

Vitali may well have won a return,on the other hand Lewis, knowing who he was fighting and how dangerous he was was would be in much better shape, and Vitali's face might not hold up to more right hands.

I share your view that Vitali was in his prime and in top shape. On the hand, Lennox was passed his best and not in great shape (came in at a career high weight).

Vitali seems to be getting too much credit for this fight. Holyfield and Mercer arguably beat a better version of Lennox. Also, Rahman was able to stop Lewis.

Mercer didnt get a rematch as it wasnt a title match and then Mercer was out for extended periods with injury and illness. The Lennox Lewis fight was in June 1996, Mercer then won a controversial points win over ex-champ Tim Witherspoon in December 1996. In the frame for a bout with Andrew Golota in 1997, Mercer suffered a neck injury and was out of action for 14 months. He returned February 1998 with a 2-round KO of Leo Loiacono, but contracted Hepatitis B and was again inactive, this time for 20 months.

yes , prime vitali's performance in getting stopped before half time by worst lewis is indicative of his ability as a stand-in, not a serious challenger, for lewis title.

Yes, fully agreed. The 2 were a great match up. Vitali would give every heavyweight in history a difficult fight.

Lewis has the beating of Vitali though, stylistically.

In my view, there is little doubt that a prime and focused Lewis stops Vitali. Especially, as Lewis has proved that he is able to take Vitali's best shots.

Vitali never threw his A#1 right hand in the fight. He never did until opponents were ready to go. He was just doing his volume punching thing and following his game plan going into the fight to take it to the 10th round and then open up. That's what he was doing in there.

And his nasty left hook was gone after the rotator cuff injury, so that punch was not at his disposal anymore. He sure did a wonderful job of compensating, but there was no snap with that left like his early bouts.

Lewis' legs were gone at the end of the 6rh round. At the end of that round, Klitschko walked him from one side of the ring to the other. Lewis' previous opponents added up had never walked Lennox around that distance. No legs. Watch him sit on that stool.

Heavyweights that lose their legs do not absorb punches like they did earlier in the fight. So it hardly has to be a big punch to hurt him, it just has to be clean. And no matter what else, Vitali was landing like 20 or more punches a round on Lennox.

A clean shot would have caused lots of problems when a guy has stilts for legs.
