    Hello. How are you?

    I was watching this:

It's pretty crap BUT Buster Douglas was at it! He's not pictured but the commentator talks about his being there. I did a bit of a double-take - BD is such a tragi-hero, such a mythic figure, such a singular human being that the thought of his cutting around doing stuff seemed to me momentarily strange. He beat up Tyson - then he went to GFC1.

And I guess he did a whole lot of other stuff.

I do have a book about Douglas which I'll dig out maybe at the weekend, but what do you guys remember/know about stuff Buster got up to when he was the champion? Anyone remember any stories apart from "not training and eating" type stories? TV appearances? Did he open anything? Was there a doomed video game in development? Anything?

Here he is on Johnny Carson:

Interesting how there were some moves to mythologise Buster's mother, whose role in this is so famous and interesting. Or at least that she was just a subject for discussion, her memory.

    Anyway, any thoughts on this?

He pretty much did a Tyson Fury once the title was in his hands.

Initially he was feted as a hero, and parades were held in his home town.

Ultimately he just wan't a huge draw though.

Yeah I mean - what did he do though?

Did he throw the first pitch out at Yankee Stadium, anything like that? He was only champ for 8 months so I can't imagine there's much but i'm curious.

What I love with Buster was the odds on the fight w/ Commander Vander. I was in big w/ Evander but it was no sure thing and I could see Douglas giving him lots of problems.

But a few things came into play that I thought anyway, folks were overlooking. Evander had proven himself as a terrific fighter---cruiser champ and cleaned out the division. Always in great shape and was always going to show up at 100% for the time when he'd get an opportunity for the heavyweight title. So we were going to get the best Holyfield and I did not think Douglas would deal with that. I guess it depends on how much you buy into Tyson and I did nowhere close to other folks buying into Mike. So the Tyson victory was pretty nice alright but what else did the guy achieve?

My theory is guys like Douglas can bring their A game one time and win the title. But they won't be making many title defenses. Lots of guys fit that bill and it is even more true at heavyweight with the zero weight limits. Kind of like what I always say---a chameleon can change it's colors. That's true. But folks think the chameleon can morph into something else---like the caterpillar to a butterfly. It doesn't. It's still a lizard.

What I absolutely loved with Douglas pre-fight were the training stories like a week and 10 days before the fight; in a sauna to lose weight. Not jogging or working out to drop the weight, but a sauna. So time to ante up some more $$$ because Evander was preparing to be the best he could be.

Next came the story about Buster ordering pizza's to be delivered to the sauna. Time for more $$$. The chameleon changed colors for the Tyson fight but now he was going to have to put in back to back terrific performances.

I was betting the ranch he would not. But folks were doing the same thing back then they do today---one guy is 6"3 or 4" and 230 and had the Tyson scalp. The other guy is just a blown up cruiser. Therefore, the result is simple and elementary. So they really did not acknowledge the additional weight or conditioning of Douglas and figured he'd win regardless.

It was after the fight they were disgusted. And poorer.

Tyson was supposed to be special referee for the Hogan vs. Savage match, but a late change was made for obvious reasons.

The only things I remember were his late night talk show appearances and the substituting for Mike Tyson as special guest referee on Saturday Night's Main Event between Hogan and Savage.

    That's about it...

EDIT: I'll give him this, because he beat Tyson it opened up the flood gates for heavyweight excitement. Holyfield, Foreman, deserving contender Ruddock, the new group (Bowe, Mercer, Morrison, Moorer and Lewis), ex champ Tyson and new champ Douglas. I started my Ring magazine boxing subscription because of it.

While champion he had a dinner set up with Ali. Douglas was late, and got chewed out by his manager and/or trainer in front of everyone there.
