If modern fighters were showing superior ability with their added bulk I'd agree with this statement, but as the heavyweights pack on more size their skills start to suffer. Holyfield at 205-210 lbs was a much better fighter than he was at 215 or heavier. At 215+ his handspeed and even his timing suffered. Handspeed, timing, and mobility trump size any day of the week. Holyfield despite giving up a ton of weight had no problems wobbling Lewis, Foreman, or Bowe and in my opinion Walcott at 10lbs lighters was both a better puncher and fighter than Holyfield. Even Joshua at 230-235 performs much better than he does at 240+, since he's less stiff and has handspeed. If Joshua fought a guy like Ezzard Charles weighing in at 240+ he'd be hitting air all night while at 230 I could see Joshua eventually timing him. The fact that a novice like Parker was a world champion say a lot about the state of the current heavyweight division, since Parker would be lucky to rank in the 80's or 90's and would've got absolutely toyed with by guys like Archie Moore or Harold Johnson.
I don't think old Louis would beat him,the prime version would decimate him with his fast combos.I'm not going to speculate about Bruno versus Mr Marchegiano.
Parker would comfortably beat; Lastarza Layne Mathews Cokkel Buonvino Beshore Applegate Wilson Shkor Savold How many of these 50's contenders and fringe contenders would be ranked today?
Tubbs ,Tucker,Coetzee,Dokes would be in the top half of the 50's heavyweight rankings. All would beat Lastarza Layne Cokkel Most by stoppage. In fact I would pick Carlos Takam to clown that bunch!
Prime Layne was a good fighter. Kind of under rated actually around here. He really wasn’t the same after the Marciano fight.
Consider this.....Bruno TKO an over the hill Joe Bugner....an over the hill Henry Cooper at 189 pounds lost and just barely to a prime Joe Bugner. It's not necessarily a given that Bruno wouldn't have had trouble with Henry Cooper, although I'd favor Bruno. But if he did have trouble with Cooper then Charles, Marciano and Walcott could trouble him even more.
Not good enough to beat those I named, he had poor defence, so so conditioning and a decent but certainly not awesome punch.
I saw all of Bruno's London bouts, he had a very heavy jab , a good solid hook, and real power in his right hand. Never a natural fighter he got the most out of his modicum of talent. One thing I do know ,if he hits any of those three flush they are going down!
I don't see it. Parker's limited skillset and inexperience would be quickly exposed in the 50's. It also doesn't help that Parker can't punch his poor footwork often results in him gassing quickly. Going to the Whyte fight I looked at Whyte's footwork and Parker's footwork and knew Whyte would have Parker eating the canvas and that he'd beat Parker. Parker's only decent wins were barely edging wins over Andy Ruiz, a lazy part time fighter and an inactive Hughie Fury, who has ability, but is still a novice fighter. LaStarza and Cockell would box circles around this kid and probably even stop him, since Parker is extremely easy to hit. Marvis Frazier regularly beat fighters better than Parker in the 80's. If Parker was serious about his career he'd dumb Kevin Barry and get a real coach that can teach him how to punch and the basics of footwork. Also, Parker would start coming in the ring around 220-225 lbs, since 230lbs is clearly too heavy for him. Especially considering Parker isn't 6'4", but closer to 6'2".
To be honest, I would not bet money on him beating guys like LaStarza in a fifteen round fight! He just disappointed me far too often!
