Most people on this forum seem to think that Foreman beat Briggs.

So if we are going to play that game, then it comes down to the Lyakovich win, which would have been a loss if Lyakovich had been given a full count.

Outside of that, Briggs has nothing!

Foreman even at that age would have destroyed Carnera though.

Comebacking Foreman Promotion used to emphasize "hamburgers". He might have to move on over to "pasta" if he takes on Carnera.

    Not true.

Primo Carnera isn't in the Hall of Fame.

He knocked out a Hall of Famer to win the title. He defended against a Hall of Famer in one of his two successful title defenses (and nobody has ever said his decision over Loughran was rigged or tainted in any way). And he lost it to a Hall of Famer.

But Carnera isn't in the Hall of Fame.

Neither is Leon Spinks, Neither is Michael Moorer.

    You're high. Honestly. That's quitting?

Quitting is getting punched in the stomach one time and not getting up - see Jim Corbett.

He was floored, what, 10 or 11 times against Baer, and still WON ROUNDS after getting off the floor? And Joe Louis ripped his lip off and the referee stopped the slaughter.

Baer actually looked to the referee and seemed to be asking him to stop the fight.

I'm not. Especially if it's scheduled for 15 rounds.

Asthma-excuse Briggs tended to throw a lot of punches in one round and then take the next four off to "recover" from the output. Carnera was a busy fighter in the ring. Endurance was one of Carnera's strong points.

Has the Carlos Takam fantasy ended yet on this board?

    Ridiculous.

When Carnera was champ in 1934, Tommy Loughran was rated #2 by RING. Carnera successfully defended the title against him. King Levinsky was rated #3 by Ring. Carnera had previously decisioned him. Don McCorkindale was rated #5 by Ring, and Carnera had previously decisioned him. George Godfrey was rated #5 when Carnera defeated him. Ernie Schaaf was a top-10 rated heavyweight by Ring when Carnera knocked him out (and he died). Stanley Poreda was rated #8 by Ring when he was given a bad decision over Carnera, and the ref and sole judge was suspended for poor officiating. Sharkey was the world champ when he knocked him out. Max Baer was the #1 contender when he defended the title against him. Joe Louis was the #1 contender when he fought him. Primo also stopped Walter Neusel and Ray Impellittiere after losing to Louis, and Neusel was rated by Ring in 1934 and Impellittier was rated in 1937.

Carnera fought practically everyone, including quite a few highly rated contenders, and he was better than Sharkey (the champ) and Loughran (#2 contender) and Levinsky (#3 contender) ... the guys who "would've" been at the top of the heavyweight division if Carnera hadn't beaten them (it wasn't a stellar period, let's be honest). He wasn't as good as Baer, clearly. Or Joe Louis. But that's no crime.

    Absolutely.

There is a clear gulf between Carnera, and the realistic contenders for the dubious honor!

Who's we? To me, character is part of the equation. If a fighter is more likely than not to come in out of shape and sickly from a coke and booze binge, then that is a factor to me.

Spinks himself described how he had bleeding ulcers from the booze alone. It would be foolish not to factor that in.
