Report: Duran in great shape the week before Leonard-Duran II

You want to make any excuse for Duran you can. The fact is he quit in a fight he was losing and starting to hit clean in. At the moment he was being hit.

You guys are all together in this and all you are doing is making Duran sound like a excuse making whiner. Was he not a prize fighter? He was given the same chance to win as anyone else numerous times, and he did not beat the legends. Fact. You can make excuses each time, but is that enough that he couldn't beat one of them?

I don't like excuses in this sport, and each guy is given a date to fight and be there, and Duran is given credit when he looks good but when he didn't excuses. And he didn't look great against the best guys he fought,and he is given excuses. Not that those guys were just great fighters.

Leonard beat a great top 25 guy in Duran. He is great. He beat Hearns.. another top 25 ATG.. He beat Hagler another.. and he beat Benitez, a top 50. He is a great fighter. The only top 10 in my estimation in the fab 4.

 

Ray's legacy is not built on one win over one great as Duran's is,, and Duran lost to this same guy by outclassing. So you guys know that you better make this win legit, or Duran does not have any real win against a great. I see your agenda here. Certainly. Ray beat 4 other greats, and as I have said over and over, my main criteria for greatness is beating fellow greats. Which disqualifies Duran as being top 10 ATG. What would get him in there????

 

He IS there and has been for 40 yrs. As early as the FEB. 1980 The Ring magazine with Robinson on the cover they polled 50 boxing authorities on greatest fighters ever and Duran came in no. 9. BEFORE he fought Leonard even once. Pick up almost any book and he is in the top ten if not the top 5. You know nothing about his previous opponents because you are a casual fan who just followed the big names in the 80s.

Years have a way of reassessing guys. I don't think you know boxing much you are a general information guy. You follow the norm. If they say Tyson went down as a fighter you say it. You follow the general opinion and don't know the differences in styles and levels of fighters. I watched boxing since 1971 and I know all about Duran and I thought wow he is devastating, but then I thought how good is Lampkin or Viruet compared to Duran then and then Ray came up and you see foot movement and more versatility and either you see this, or you don't want to? They were not as good as the guys Duran would have struggled with. He should have won and did.. It is easy for him to look great. Duran is overrated if anyone rates him top 10. The resume lacks that level. It has probably top 25.. With Ray and lightweight reign. No way top 10. and I stand by it. Always.

 

Dude HEARNS is nowhere near top 25 on any list. Hagler either. Most old time writers fighters trainers don't have LEONARD there either. But they do Duran. In the top 10!
. By the way your boy Whitaker is NOWHERE to be seen in very top fighter lists. About him no one cares. He was BORING! Plus beat no one. Lost to Ramirez DeLaHoya Trinidad and drew with old worn out Chavez. Beat no one according to your own criteria for greatness. If you say diffferent you are being really hypocritical wouldn't you say?
