Seriously this is so out of the blue, i have to question the motives. The same week ggg v charlo gets ordered, and the top ranked super middle gets beaten by smith in his first title bout...i seriously thought smith v rocky was nailed on...all theories welcome. Respect

Like most fighters nowadays (Zup Vasyl) he wants to move up and win a paper title. That's what guys do now.

Thanks for the insightfull response, i was and should still be a canelo fan, but hes let himself down alot recently with meat carry on, and the score card from the first ggg fight( the second fight he fully deserved the win in my opinion). So now i doubt his motives and career moves and nearly everything him and his team do. His resume is top draw, but the contorversies are stacking up.

Just enjoy the fights. The stock markets took a dip this week and nobody's talking about it. Inflation is hitting the dollar and other countries money have been totally devalued.
Combat sports are my escape from the reality that everyone might be getting in breadlines like the former Soviet Union if the dollar collapse. Canelo will be on easy street eating roided up cow in Mexico. What will you be doing?

Not sure why this seems like such a mystery to some of you. I'm not crazy about the opponent, but from a career POV this is a great move.

He moves up to test the waters at 168 while potentially becoming a 3 div. "champ". In the meantime allows Charlo to become a bigger name by facing and possibly beating GGG.

By early to mid 2019, after the dust has settled, he has the likes of Ramirez, Benavidez, Smith and Uzcategui as potential foes at 168 while he still has Charlo, GGG, Saunders and Lemiux right below.

    Smart business move by DLH.

It’s a easy fight for canelo
He deserves it after the two ggg fights

Easy pickings and it looks good on paper. Sure, people will complain but eventually people will look back on his career and see his resume... 154 Champ, 160 Champ, 168 Champ (a piece of it anyway). Anyway, eventually he needs to fight Golovkin again, they definitely have unfinished business.

Joey Ganache and Adrian Broner come to mind. Winning titles in several weight classes doesn't make you a P4P great... unless you are beating the best fighters in the divisions you are fighting in. In my opinion there is a lot of work to be done at MW for Canelo. If he wants to jump up for an easy title, fine, but he needs to come back to 160. Golovkin III, Jacobs, and others.

I get where you coming from but does it look good on paper? Or is it another controversy, i dont know man, i almost feel sorry for him, hes the most versitile fighter in my opinion, a real talent. But theres to many questions now for me, or at the very least more than there should be for a fighter with his ability.

My question is this, if Canelo is such a small middle weight then why is he moving up to 168? I have nothing bad to say about him after the GGG fight but I always felt that he was working hard to maintain his weight. He is big boned and wide as a 57 ford. Should have been fighting at middle weight or above.

It is equivalent of Liam Smith. Except it is up a division, at 168. Another top 10 ranked opponent. Very quick turnaround for a superstar nowadays to stay active.

It could be much worse. And it is not worthy of complaining about in much of any way unless you literally complain about everything.

This was unexpected because he moves up and GGG was thought of as the bigger guy. I don't think any of us thought of Canelo as a 168 pound guy. So who knows what this means. He could be distancing himself from GGG and also winning another title makes him a 3 times champ. A legitimate 3 time champ. not a Broner or Mikey Garcia who didn't fight anyone to win those titles.
