Turpin's win over Sugar Ray Robinson ? Or Honeyghans win over Don Curry ? Sugar lost to Randy because a European tour and living the good life . Curry lost to Lloyd because he was weight drained or something to that effect. Robinson is seen as a ATG at middle. Curry was the P4P Best fighter at the time in the world .So taking various pros and cons in to account ,which iyo was the More impressive win ?
Minor amendment - Pretty sure Hagler was p4p #1 and Curry #2. As good as Curry had been going Hagler was deserving of the mantle.
I'd go with Turpin considering Robinson went on a very good run after (despite losing more regularly), he did beat Turpin in. A return, Basilio, Fulmer, Olson, Graziano, Moyer etc. Curry completely folded though did win another title against Rosi, that was his only real win of note afterwards as he sort of became a guy tip guys went through. I guess you could spin that as Honeyghan ruining Curry more. Both awesome wins though, Honeyghan was more destructive but then probably shouldn't have been as big an underdog as he was going in with an exact record as Curry (albeit Curry at a higher level of victories).
Your right John ,my mistake there. But Curry ,no doubts at that point ,was getting the More publicity' ,at least in boxing circles. He was being made out to be the new Leonard ,which before Honeyghan ,was understandable. He was tipped to reign for many year's .And yet he actually lost before Hagler did ironically.
Hagler was slowing down by this point and wa caught far too much vs Mugabi, Curry would been caugght less by Mugabi, had they met at light middle which was 'the beast`s' natural weight.
trupin takes it Hands down. Curry was very good…….but he lacked greatness because his prime was too short. Robinson was imo the best ever. beating him in his prime is crazy. but Turpin did it.
Curry was set to fight Hagler but Leonard told him it was a foolish move, and then stepped in instead, Honeyghan and Ray were both quicker than Hagler at this point, so I don`t get what Curry losing before Marvin means.
Robinson fought far better vs Turpin in their first fight than Curry did vs Honeyghan, he looked stoned or something, completely unfocused, Lloyd outsped him but didn`t show the defensive slips that Turpin showed v Ray, Randy was a far better defensive fighter than Lloyd, better win all round.
It was in reference to John's comment that Hagler was rated above Curry at the time. And curry was seen as the future whilst Marvin reaching the end. Yet Curry suffered his loss first.
Yes jack ,believe it or not there were actually magazine s that had rating s and ranking s .Didn't always agree with them but that's all we had back in the day .
