October 7, 1995 Lennox Lewis stops Tommy Morrison

Morrison got exposed in this fight Steward stated afterr the fight that Lewis was still improving and gave him a B grade for how he fought, not a very good fight but I excited at the time because I felt Lewis was headed towards bigger things. After this bout, I read in my boxing magazine, 'reverse the hearse' a quote from a Lewis interview, directed towards fans who felt his career was over after the loss to McCall.

 

Nothing really new happened in this fight. Morrison had a puncher's chance, but he wasn't going to outbox Lewis like he did Foreman. Whenever I watch this fight I'm always surprised how small Tommy looked compared to Lennox.

 

I remember Morrison saying after the fight "we have to go back to the drawing board" and the interviewer saying something like "you've had nearly 50 fights and you need a drawing board?"

 

gutsy thing to say to such a hard puncher.

 

Well he didn't tell him that "I'd kick your ass if I was younger" lol

Still there is a huge difference between taking a punch from a 147 lb Floyd vs potentially taking one from a 230 lb Morrison with possibly the hardest left hook in heavyweight history. Not to mention Tommy was a two handed puncher. Jeez

 

It was an excellent performance by Lewis. He beat up a very dangerous huge hitting opponent quite easily. Made him look pedestrian.

 

Morrison looked badly faded in this fight. No longer the same young kid who looked young and fresh against Ray Mercer in 1991. His years of partying and out of control reckless lifestyle had caught up with him by his point and he looked washed up at the age of 26-27

 

That and the countless slugfest fights with Ruddock,Hipp and countless others.

 

It's funny to think that Lennox was 4 years older than Tommy and tho he had fought fewer fights, he had a W A Y better resume at that point. Tommy, who was only 26, looks old and weathered and seems only able to go thru the motions.

Drugs are bad, kids. They really are.

 

This was a very good and underrated win for Lennox. He was rebuilding after the McCall loss and to go in there with a huge puncher like Morrison not long after being KO'ed showed guts.

 

I remember back then I actually gave Morrison a puncher’s chance. I was drastically wrong

 

Lennox Lewis' famous and great run started with Tommy Morrison. It was a routine Lewis win; during the fight Lennox did not come into danger.
