I see on wikipedia it says he mostly fought with gloves under quensberry rules, but it says mostly. So does that mean early in his career he fought someone under London Prize Ring rules? I do wonder because all his fights and mention of him are gloved. He even fought Sullivan gloved just a couple years after Sullivan fought bare knuckle defending his championship against Kirke (spelling?). So if the championship was fought under London Prize rules how would a boxer competing during this time and a couple years earlier never fight under those rules? Surely, he must have not expected all of a sudden for them to change the rules for all fights including the title being fought gloves so shortly after starting his career and expect to at least fight bare knukcle sometimes if he was ever to be champion (again it is just hard to imagine him expecting never to fight under London rules if even the championship some years after his career was going was fought that way). Did he really manage to toally avoid it or planned to that way to ever fight bare knuckle?

I also wonder, why did Sullivan not request to fight bare knukcle also with COrbett like he did a couple years ealier against Kirke since that was his strength vs Corbett and he actually even past his prime may have beaten him there since throws and stuff were allowed?

Sullivan preferred fighting with gloves. Kilrain demanded to fight bareknuckle, as did Jem Smith. Sullivan refused. Smith and Kilrain then fought bareknuckle for the Police Gazzete title, it was actually a draw but Kilrain got the best of it and was awarded the title. This finally got Sullivan to fight him. The LPR rules worked against Sullivan. Kilrain would repeatedly go down easilly to avoid punishment when Sullivan got the advantage.

To my knowledge Corbett never fought bareknuckle, but I could be wrong.

In the ring with James J. Corbett, by Adam Pollack, pp. 12-13, in 1884-1885 Corbett supposedly had two informal fights with Joe Choynski, one gloved, and one bareknuckle.

    I have Jim's autobio here, I'll have a look. Off-hand I think no, just skin-tight gloves v Choynski.

He says he wore 5 oz gloves v Choynski who had skin-tight ones.

Did he fight Choynski under London Prize rules though? Whether gloved or not?

I also have a hard time finding whether Choynski ever fought bareknuckle under London Prize rules at all as he entered also in-between the two eras.

I also wonder how Jack Johnson would have done under the London rules.

Hard gloves could be used in both Queensbury and LPR bouts.

Watching how Johnson manhandled men in the clinch I think he would have done well
