This is the big chance for DAZN and who knows when they will get another like this. HBO has taken an unprecedented step away from the sport and left the biggest draw in world boxing is now without a network and they have the chance to sign him. If they really have the money to invest, they simply must offer Canelo PPV like money to get him on board. Even if they decide against using a PPV model, a Canelo deal will drive more US subscriptions than any other possible or current deal in boxing. Matchroom and WBSS are a joke compared to Canelo. Canelo is also more gettable for DAZN than any other HBO stars as Showtime have no hope of signing him. We all know Oscar and GBP hate and won't work with Showtime so you have a two horse race between ESPN and DAZN. Surely this one should be a layup. If DAZN doesn't make a serious move to get Canelo we will know for a fact they have no money to invest. It will be a clear indicator that they're playing the long long game and desperately hoping to build slowly, and more importantly, cheaply over many many years. My prediction is that DAZN bring in GBP as a partner, in addition to Matchroom, and we start to see the whole GBP roster fighting on DAZN. That is the obvious move and a real game changer for DAZN.
Of course they are playing the long game. DAZN doesn't live or die with boxing. They are playing the long game as they need to wait until sports rights for other domestic sports go to tender.

I think they should do whatever they feel is best for their business. With or without canelo its not going to be the determining factor on how the business performs as DAZN is not a boxing channel. Its going to be a multi sports platform which needs to draw in a lot more subscribers than just boxing fans.
Please answer the question. I asked what you think. Do you personally think DAZN should sign Canelo or let him go to another network? DAZN are claiming to have made a $1bn investment in boxing. If you genuinely belive it's not a major focus for them, please let me know one other available sport they could invest similar money in that would give them a return better than a Canelo/GBP deal?
I can't see Canelo/Fielding doing more than 300K on PPV. I certainly think DAZN have a decent chance of getting Canelo for a one fight shot.
Why? If they have the money they claim they can pay Canelo PPV money without charging the customers PPV fees. Canelo is the marquee name in world boxing and currently the biggest draw i the US. If you decide your business model can never support him, surely that's a clear indication that you have no intention of ever being the dominant force in US boxing. How can DAZN ever compete with showtime if they can't pay PPV-like money to the fighters?
I don't think they will get Canelo. I can see them getting Porter, Jacobs and in some sort of capacity G. Davis.
Well the Bellator deal was a nine figure deal so there is one. Any deals they managed to do with the NFL or NBA will be huge. Boxing is just one piece of the puzzle. Personally I think they of course should try and sign Canelo. His a star so it would be silly not to however it is far from make or break.
It's funny how Hearn attempts to spin DAZNs success as his success. I mean Bellator will be attracting most of the subs, nobody wants to watch his bum fights
Actually, yes, for a fight like this (vs Fielding) DAZN might be able to pay Canelo PPV money indeed. In fact, at this (early) stage of DAZN, where they are ready to overspend it would be mutually beneficial.
Yeah for a one off against a lower profile fighter which wouldn't cost as much then yes it could be worth it. The signs are that Hearn will try and stockpile some of the budget he has for some eye catching deals, mainly clustered around his four 'monster' nights. But to sign him long term and replace all those PPV subscriptions from subscriber payments? Not going to work. Besides you need to think about the nature of the customer acquisitions that Canelo would deliver. Are these boxing fans who will stay or Canelo fans who will leave as soon as Canelo leaves or retires?
Some will stay some will go I'd imagine , it's a gradual process of building a large subscription base , Canelo would see an anomaly spike of new subscriptions that many may well only stick around until he does but would also see a larger total number of longterm subs after Canelo has been through.
