Who would win this one if both showed up at their best and how easily?

You have to favour Patterson, but the loss to Ingemar Johansson makes it hard to write off Braddock. I think Braddock could KO him if he caught him.

Patterson gets knocked down early after trying to go for a quick kill on the iron-chinned Braddock. He proceeds to fight more cautiously, building up points and eventually exposing a weakness in Braddock in the late rounds with a flash of Patterson's brilliant speed.

    Patterson late KO

Yeah, usually five word picks are useless, but this is it in a nutshell.

    This.

You occasionally hear things from Braddock's opponents, that make you think that he was a lot more dangerous than his record suggests.

Seems that the prevailing opinion is that it would be a cake walk for Floyd. I disagree. Jimmy had an iron chin, good stamina, extensive experience, a formidable right and decent skills. Floyd had tremendous speed, knockout power, good combos, but he had a weak chin and, if the Ingo fight is taken into account, a suseptibility to right hands. Both of these fighters have one thing in common: they are very much underrated. It’s a toss up for me.

Patterson should win....but Braddock a very live underdog.

In Braddock's last 5 fights, he beat John Henry Lewis, Art Lasky, Max Baer, & Tommy Farr, and hung tough with prime Joe Louis, but lost in 8 rds to Joe. (Braddock later said, "When he hit me with that left-right combination, I could've stayed down on the canvas for three weeks." Entering the fight against Louis, Braddock had been knocked down just twice, and he got up each time to win. Louis was the only person who managed to put him down for the referee's count of ten.")

Plus, Braddock was not a small hvyweight (for his day) Jack Cuddy of United Press referred to Braddock as "...one of the hardest punchers in the game." (1935)

    Braddock
    • Age: 32 years old
    • Weight: 195 pounds
    • Height: 6 ft 3
    • Chest nor.: 39 inches
    • Chest exp.: 42 inches
    • Reach: 78 inches

1938-01-21 : Jim Braddock 199½ lbs beat Tommy Farr 207 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10
It was a close fight but Braddock earned the victory as he began dancing around Farr and scoring with his jab in later rounds.

According to the Pittsburgh Press, amongst others, Farr won rounds 4 to 8 and only lost round 3 because of a call by the referee. Most objective observers felt the worst Farr deserved was a draw and that it was sentiment and a late rally that won the decision for Braddock. [Referee Johnny McAvoy was the third man in the ring when Braddock "The Cinderella Man" upset Max Baer.]

After Braddock beat Farr he became the number two contender for Joe Louis' heavyweight title, which Braddock lost to Louis a few months earlier. But Braddock knew it was time for him to get out of boxing while he's still on top of the game and hasn't suffered a serious injury yet.

Braddock announced his retirement on February 1st.

Measurements of James J. Braddock and Tommy Farr (according to Associated Press):

Even more thought Farr won the fight with Louis! Farr is another underrated fighter.
