90's boxing was in a bad place. It was all athleticism and not a lot of skill. Calzaghe was the exception. Which other boxers were as well trained as Calzaghe during the 90`s?

Not weak. The top fighters were good, but the guys just below that were not, so the top fighter were not challenged as much as other eras and didn't improve as much or were not tested. It is really hard to tell also.

It was a pretty bad decade for lightweights.

For most weight divisions, it was superior to now.

Very few competitive matches against the other elites. Most often it was top guy against an easy to beat B grade opponent. And not a bunch of cross promotions either. And you had the networks staying with their favorites as well. The potential was far greater than what we the fans actually received.

And that's naming only about 1/2 let alone who they fought. Break it down by division I, think we could fill this thread out to 10-20 pages easily!
Greater was how they tore apart their predecessors beating the dogsmack out of the old lions, whereas today, the old lions like Hopkins tested the youth to straight embarrassment.
Man, the way DLH beat down and bloodied JCC, whew, sad. The way Tito broke down SwePea. jeeezus!

Today's era has gone life and death with old dogs, causing them to fight until their late 40s.
    I loved the 90s!

I think it was talent laden but there was a lot of posturing between promoters/networks and a lot of the mega fights that did happen towards the middle and end of the decade were major letdowns.

Talent though was fine. Jones, Whitaker, Trinidad, Holyfield, Toney, Chavez in the early 90s, Ricardo Lopez and perhaps just as talented and complete (or even moreso) than any of them Mark Johnson just to name a few.

But as I said certain fights just didn’t happen for example I think Tito was the most fun elite fighter and personality but he only got one mega fight and that fight sucked really bad.

Lmao I refer to the 90s as the bronze age of boxing. (Gold being late 60s to 70s, Silver being late 30s to 40s)

Definitely better than **** like the Sharkey/Schmeling era or the Holmes era

Unless you are talking exclusively heavyweights, I think the 80s were fine as well on both ends of the decade
