Is Wilder the most overachieved fighter in boxing today?

I say so. Because name me one other fighter's gotten far as him with his limited boxing skills. He just has a punch and athletic ability. He literally rides and dies on one single aspect to his game, his big right hand. I can't think of another fighter in another weight class that's gotten so far with such a one trick pony move.

I feel that every other weight classes you gotta have more than just a punch to win a title. Like at middleweight or welterweight for example, there's lot of guys that can punch hard but that doesn't necessarily mean they're gonna be a champion.

Like at middleweight, Curtis Stevens has a big punch but is he a champion? or Danny Garcia has a big left hook but is he a champion?

Those weight classes, you gotta have some boxing ability, a good punch, conditioning, durability, etc. A combination of things to be the champ.

And lets be real, if the heavyweight division was talented as the welterweight division, Wilder would not be a champion right now. The Bronze Bomber is just fortunate that his weight class is **** poor in talent.

    Probably and you answered why.

There aren't that many good fighters at heavyweight right now, almost all of them have at least one glaring weakness.

You look at a guy like Gerald Washington if he had even "good" punch power he would have stopped wilder in embarrasing fashion but he didn't.

It's either power guts with leaky D and glass chins or skilled guys with no power

I think he may well be.

He's got one trick - and its a good one, to be fair - but today's dire HW scene and excellent dodging skills is the main reason he's gotten as far as he has.

Think that crown goes to Tony Bellew.

Yes, but only because he is getting supernatural help.

As far as the least talented WC go I would say its Charles Martin or Mike Weaver.

I don't think so as Tony Bellew didn't achieve anything special apart from beating a shot, old and slow David Haye twice. One time he wasn't even able to take out a guy who was fighting on one leg.

I think he's more skilled than people give him credit for. Those highlight reel windmill clips are so unbalanced and odd looking that they make him look like a novice. If you watch his last fight against Ortiz though, although he's getting outboxed, he does have some ring iq to go alongside the superb athleticism.

He also won a vacant cruiser WBC strap against Makabu and has beaten Masternak... lost a lot of pretend money via the sportsbookie on those fights.

This. Martin becoming world champion is an incredible feat, the man is terrible! Wilder at least have a killer punch, solid chin and underrated jab. He took clean shots to the head while on the ropes against Ortiz, and he didn’t even go down. His chin is solid, without being granite.

Same goes for Joshua btw. If a fighter can take a barrage of punches from Klitschko while being gassed, and still survive, then his chin is solid, at least.

You can't compare Stevens or DG's power to Wilders. Wilder's power is closer in line to someone like Julian Jackson. Although P4P I still consider Jackson a bigger puncher, there is still one big difference between the two. Wilder steps in with his body weight whilst fully loading up on punches and still manages to land them on a regular basis. Credit due to the clever ways he uses of his jab to set up these bombs.

Now imagine if Tommy Hearns was in the WW division, with today's modern training, weight cutting and nutrition. Hearns packs on 20 pounds after the weigh in. You allow him one free punch on every WW, he gives himself some space, steps in, fully loads up and throws the hardest punch possible. How many WW's do you think would be left standing.

The only counter argument to that i have however, is that there is still only so much trauma a human head can handle. Heavyweight bombs goes beyond that limit for most humans. So Wilder may not have close to 100% KO rate at lower weights, but still, there would be a lot of bodies on the canvas.

Yeah but those "achievements" are nothing special. Masternak is solid but no world beater and Makabu is good but has a glass chin. Both good wins on a resume but not enough to call Bellew an overachiever.
