Is it time we start viewing Canelo as a future ATG?

He didn't fight Lara at 154. That happened at 155, i.e. Middleweight.

Yes but we both know he lost both times, don't we !

Money plays a huge role in the sport at that level and he wasn't getting the W in Vegas in a Golden Boy promotion without a KO.

Still, he went toe-to-toe with the best in the division, was very competitive, and heard the final bell.

    Twice !

Something only the huge Jacobs was able to do in 27 fights.

He was the best 154-lber for close to four years (ignoring the near shutout to catchweight Floyd).

So if he can clean out the 168 division and maybe even do something at 175 (he's only 28), he could well earn ATG status.

He's already elite and a lock for the HoF.

The boy has a potentially bright future ahead of him...

...and a pretty decent past behind him !

He’s obviously a first ballot hall of famer.

Bro can we please stop acting like coming 1lb over in a non title fight is jumping divisions... never in history has a guy fighting 1lb or in the Angulo fight .5lb over in a non title fight been considered jumping weight, stop the propaganda

Ok. My point remains though. Canelo was regarded as elite when he fought GGG. How often do old fighters beat young elite fighters?

Nah **** that noise. 155 is over the JMW limit. Therefore the lowest weight class that could be is MW.

I've not looked at the stats tbh but Golovkin was the favourite in this particular fight, both times. He was higher ranked both divisionally and p4p.

I dont care. At 36 hes too old to beat an elite young fighter. The fact that he was even competitive was amazing. Look at history, 36 year old fighters are usually just pasted against the elite young fighters.

    Hes too damn old.

Then I hope you bet big and won some money because according to the bookies it was an upset both times

Big Red is definitely HOF worthy and on track to seal the deal for a spot

Canelo is better than many wish to concede for sure but for me, his many close decisions, weight games, proven positive drug test etc etc make his on-paper achievements "tainted".
    He has time though....

Personally, that whelp he came out with when they read out the scores of the ggg2 fight was just too cringey and will forever keep him from the top table historically.

Even taking into account the 2 Golovkin robberies, he is a very, very good fighter. He's clearly better at 160 and his fatal flaw, his lead feet and leaky gas tank, seem to have come right. He's probably still going to beat a bunch of people; I wouldn't be surprised if he goes down as an ATG.

This is ignoring the drugs and dodgy scoring aspects of his career. Taking those into account, the matter becomes more doubtful.

This is why I said initially we are at an impasse. Because your opinion is just fundamentally different than mine. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you seem to be taking the stance of Golovkins age and Canelos duck was not a big deal. If that is your stance I'll disagree until I'm blue in the face.
