ESPN2: Jason Robert Quigley vs. Freddy Hernández Gómez & Christian González vs. Rey Pérez II RBR

Quigley making his first defense of the NABF 160lb belt.

Not the Mexican vs. Irish middleweight title fight we deserve (Canelo vs. BJS seems pretty unlikely at this point ) but the one that we need, right now.

 

Round 1

Hernández working a jab and scoring in an odd sort of rocking-chair motion, swaying out to load up and in to land. Quigley is holding the left arm out, fully extended in Hernández's line of sight but not snapping it as a jab. Quigley is sniping with rights on the body. Hernández jabs in and gets put in a headlock. 1-1-2 on the guard by Quigley. 1-2-3 by Hernández, everything blocked but the finishing hook banging in just beneath Quigley's earlobe. Clubbing right by Quigley as they collide in the center of the ring, both punching in a messy tangle of arms coming into a clinch. Hernández trots in, lancing out a jab into the chin and getting hit on the back of the neck with another Quigley right. Hernández lands a right hand downstairs.

Round 2

Hernández is driving rights into the stomach and then backing straight up with his knuckles pressed against his forehead as though sheltering his eyes and peering across the desert in the sun. Quigley is chasing him out, flicking light jabs out from the shoulder and lobbing heavy rights from the hip. NICE right hand plugged into the belt line by Quigley, sitting down on it and landing with a thump. Hernández is rushing in with his elbows raised to his waist, face covered, looking to loop high shots into the face of Quigley. Nice step-back move and skewering body counters by Quigley. Bit of clinching, getting messy. Both landing rabbit punches. Flurry into the guard by Quigley.

Osuna: What do you think of Quigley's performance?

Hopkins: um...very average.

Mind you I've seen B-Hop totally over-inflate the worth of some crummy Golden Boy prospects with his mugging & jiving company man commentary, so for him to be this critical means something has gone VERY wrong and the Quigley Express has gone way off-rails...

 

Pretty sucky main event tbh. E-Boy playing keepaway from Sakai for eight rounds was a lot more entertaining.
