I only bought up Holmes because you stated Rocky beats him you brought up head to head I simply responded. As mentioned Walcott, Charles and Moore were all past there best Walcott was likely 40 when they fought many reports state he was two years older then he claimed. And Louis wasn't just past prime he was totally shot. LaStraza come on the guy was a journeyman.
That was Archie Moore, no such reports exist for Walcott. "I'm not old, just ugly" -Jersey Joe Walcott gave one of his best showings of his entire career. Walcott aged extremely well, only getting craftier with age. Charles was only 32 and looked as sharp as ever in their first fight. Moore was past prime imo but he was still the reigning LHW champ, would reign for the next 7 years, and also beat Nino Valdes 2 times and Bob Baker before fighting Marciano. 2 of the best heavyweight contenders of the era. A dangerous man. LaStarza was undefeated when they first fought, and was the #1 contender when they rematched. And another thing, Louis was on a 9 win streak after beating top guys like Lee Savold and Cesar Brion, and going the full 15 rounds against reigning champ Ezzard Charles. Never underestimate Joe Louis
I guess I'm in the "minority" because Whitaker was questionable great in my mind. It boggles my mind to think somebody doesn't view him as an ATG
Totally agree. You yourself rate him as a great fighter and understand what he brings to the table however. I'm sure you appreciate his "vast skills" which is what i was referring to.
If most consider them great, then I almost certainly do too. Because it's not easy for most people to consider a fighter to be great. You have to be a special fighter in order to do that. A great one. Boom. Bam. Kapow.
I'm just putting it out there that Benitez did enough to be considered "great". Benitez completely schooled Duran and won going away, the Laing fight was pretty close. It's safe to say Duran didn't approach Laing with as much dedicaton as he had just lost to Benitez in a title tilt and was pretty hard to light a fire under in lesser fights - a weakness. Duran tired in the second half vs Laing. Going into the Benitez fight Duran had only two losses in his career.
How do people feel about Shane Mosley? Great? Nearly great? Or not great at all? Can't quite make my mind up about him.
Not in the top 30 at LW, not in the top 20 at WW, and not in my top 100 P4P. Still really f’n good and definitely HOF worthy. I guess what I’m saying is that he’s ‘great’ but not an ‘all-time great’, if that makes sense.
