I am not sure history will be that kind to Floyd because he was obviously cherry picking at some points.

H2H doesn't matter, Mayweather was 3 weight divisions smaller.

I'm almost certain that people will remember this less and less as time go on.

How often is Sugar Ray Robinson's ranking altered that much for not fighting Burley?

Very true. Floyd has had two careers - his debut up until about 2006/7. And then from that point until the present day, he started playing the role that he plays now of Money Mayweather, a figure that people (including myself) love to hate. I think that started around the time of the Hatton and De La Hoya fights.

Before that, I just remember him as a really excellent boxer.

Why the **** do people keep brining up Head 2 Head?

Is Stanley Ketchell better than Henry Armstrong P4P because he would beat Armstrong's opponents now?

Jeffries beat Bob Fitzsimmons, does that make him better than Fitz P4P?

Jack Johnson beat Sam Langford, does that make him better than Langford P4P?

Joey Maxim beat Sugar Ray Robinson, does that make him better than Robinson P4P?

    Of course ****ing not. Idiots.

Haha, surely you knew what you were getting into when you started this thread (it's a good one, by the way).

Starting any thread comparing Floyd Mayweather with a recognised great fighter from the past is a bit like the effect had when Mr Burns in The Simpsons says 'release the hounds'.

I agree - people will forget and he will get ranked higher. They'll see the names he fought and not when he fought them and assume thet were all great wins. And they'll be wrong.

I expected people to argue against it. But I'm surprised at the level of constant mental gymnastics to give Mayweather no credit whatsoever.

    Pretending longevity doesn't count
Pretending he was in his prime was he was in his late 30's
Pretending he didn't fight tons of guys who were top fighters at the time, because they weren't at their peak
Pretending he was a natural Welterweight, instead of a Super Featherweight

It's closer to outright smearing than even a biased assessment.

My main beef with Mayweather is that he avoided Pacquiao when that fight really mattered. If he'd fought him back in 2010 or even 2011 and beat him, I'd be singing his praises now and be talking about him as one of those possible 25 greatest fighters.

Oh ok, so you lack the actual knowledge and mental capacity to refute what i wrote with evidence, got it.

I agree that lowers his ranking, but you can make similar arguments against Leonard, and people have ITT.

Robinson ducking Burley is far more egregious, the Pacquaio situation was fairly mutual, and at least they fought eventually. Why is Robinson forgiven but not Floyd?

Keen to know more about SRR ducking Burley. Burley's last ever fight at 147 occurred 2 years before SRR even turned pro. He never fought at 147 again. By the time SRR won the title Burley was campaigning strictly at 160. Burley was about to have his last 5 fights and lost right after Ray won the title regardless. Ray still held the 147 pound title when Burley retired.

Sure a decent offer was probably made but there are a helluva lot of intangibles going on and it wouldn't have been for a title regardless. I don't buy into it very heavily.

I agree with this. It was a business decision from and that comes with a price.
