This content is protected Crawford and Loma seem to have an edge over all their opponents and this vid shows why, fighters will probably start being trained using this style more and more. Would fighters like Crawford have an edge over former greats by using this tactic? Hagler was one of the first fighters to use his dominant hand as his lead, Moorer did this also but not as well, it did give him awesome power at light heavy though. (I`m sure some people will name fighters that used this tactic before Marvin, but Hagler vs Minter was the first boxing match I ever watched).
The thing that indicates weather a guy can succeed with this is his ability to develop the off hand as well. If you can use that rear hand straight with your non-dominant hand (feels unbelieveably awkward to throw for most) and get accustomed to the requisite footwork of using the opposite style it can be deadly. Having all that power and dexterity with your closest/ most powerful weapon is a godsend but you need to develop that off hand to keep opponents from just circling away from the lead hook and jab.
De LA hoya also trained to be Orthodox, I don't think it was an advantage for hagler, its part of the reason he lost to Leonard.
Hagler was awesome in a southpaw stance in a lot of his early 80`s fights and brilliant at switch hitting, he was much more skilled than the heavier Moorer using this southpaw tactic. Hagler gave away the first four rounds vs Ray fighting orthodox and came on strong when he switched to southpaw.
I'm confused, so hagler was a natural Orthodox but fought southpaw? He seems like a natural southpaw to me n not as sharp when fighting Orthodox.
I`m sure I saw on a film study it mentioning Hagler being a converted orthodox which gave him a powerful right jab and hook.
Max Schmeling was an orthodox fighter, but in some ways he behaved like a southpaw, leading and probing with his overhand right, and using it to set up his left hook.
I was assuming he was southpaw n u were referring to when turned Orthodox he was leading with his stronger hand n why I was confused. Any idea when he made that change, from the start or as a amateur?
Not sure, but his earlier fights are on youtube and by the late 70`s he was a southpaw so he must have made this change pretty early on I would guess.
I read an article where Angelo Dundee said that they found out that Hagler was right handed and that he didn't have as much power in his left hand. He said that was how SRL beat him. When SRL fought him they had SRL move to his right and Hagler's left regardless of which stance Hagler was using. That probably confused Hagler as southpaws are used to orthodox fighters moving away from the southpaw's left hand. Most trainers of orthodox fighters have them try to get their left foot outside of the southpaw's right foot, Hagler was probably used to that, and had probably been working with his sparring partners doing that, then SRL did the opposite...
