I am sure this thread has been on here several times but what British fighter would you say was the biggest waste of talent. Either poorly managed or lazy with training, wrong path etc. I'll start with Kevin Mitchell
Kevin Mitchell - amazes me that he never won a world title. He didn't live the life an athlete should. Frankie Gavin - should have been way more dedicated with his weight. Mitchell Smith - same as Gavin, plus keeps getting into trouble. In his early pro fights he looked a brilliant talent. Jamie Moore - should have ****ed Frank Maloney off. Unbelievable that he never even had one shot at a world title. Fred Evans - should have turned pro straight after the 2012 Olympic Games with a big promoter, he must have lost so much potential money by sticking to the amateurs/ getting lazy and getting into trouble.
Definitely my vote goes to Frankie Gavin. An insane talent who clearly doesn’t properly train, doesn’t have the right diet or lifestyle and as a result isn’t elite. If you were to catch him at a younger age before his bad habits started to develop then you would say he was world class. Unable to make the weight was his signature goodbye as an amateur. I wonder why he couldn’t make weight.
It’s testament to his skill levels that I can say that even though he’s won a world title, Billy Joe Saunders has wasted far too much of his peak years messing about.
Agreed with Smith, I was really really high on him at one point and he's just not kicked on in the slightest
Kell brook, I think he could have done bi things at 147, instead he smashed cans before stepping up 2 divisions against a killer in GGG then killed himself too make 147 again to fight another beast in Spence, it’s a shame how badly he’s been mismanaged
Couldn't agree more. Fought at 154 once, which is probably his best weight now and has been for some years. Awful matchmaking against GGG and then going down to fight Spence was even more stupid. Eddie claims he has been telling him to move up for years, so not sure what his obsession with 147 is and has been.
Yes all these. Mitchell at sfw was awesome. I'd of put my house on him in those days, he was a joy to watch. Bradley Saunders. I know he's had troubles with his hands but he was also known to not live the lifestyle and enjoyed been Jack the lad more. P.s remember Smith calling Loma out.lol
Scott Harrison as well - he was a massive waste of talent. he could have been a British ATG. Imagine if he'd had the discipline of a Scott Quigg type.
Not strictly British, but british isles, .... John Joe Nevin. Olympic medL winner. ...then went ga-ga with drink and the traveller lifestyle... .. Completely and utterly blew it.. .Worse than any one else IMO.
Tyson Fury. Who knows how different the heavyweight landscape would be now if he held it together after that infamous night in Düsseldorf. He gets a lot of stick which is justified, but for me that performance was elite. He may beat wilder but he won't have fulfilled his potential. 3 wasted years. Honourable mention to BJS. Again, surrounds himself with clowns and wonder why his career has turned into a circus.
