"He could have made the fights with cotto, sturm etc if he'd wanted them" Here's the truth: Golovkin made a massive mistake choosing Universum as his promoter. He wanted those fights but UNIVERSUM blocked him. That's why Pirog, who had a decent promoter, got those fights, while Golovkin was left out. As soon as he got away from Universum in 2014 he starting getting better fights because his own promoter wasn't blocking him.
Nah man, Golovkin was content in fighting nobodies and being completely unknown to the vast majority of the fanbase, that was his dream all along. Those interviews he gave with Abel about how unhappy he is with the promoter? Pff nonsense! He loved Universum as they allowed him to fight more bums!

To add to Kiwi's point though, even after the split with Universum, he was ducked, for a long time by pretty much all the top middleweights. Sturm wanted none of it, Martinez didn't, heck Geale dropped his title to duck him, and you know it's bad when a guy of Geale's calibre drops a belt in order to avoid facing you. Things started picking up for GGG, but honestly, only recently he's been put into a position where he doesn't have to chase fights, they're coming to him now. Unfortunately it's quite late into his career this happened.
