Eddie futch Comes to mind. he was a brilliant tactitian. both frazier and Norton were two rather averagely talented heavyweights……….yet they beat a prime ali, the perhaps most naturally gifted Heavyweight of all time (you can argue Norton went 3-0 against ali).
Charley Goldman, Dundee, Ray Arcel, Eddie Futch, Dou Duva, Cus D'Amato, Freddie Roach, Don Turner... and Teddy Atlas (dunno if he'd really count, more of a hype man)? are all in the discussion imo. If i had to pick one I'd pick either goldman or dundee
Seems like the best trainers have a certain method that produces a certain style, not multi. I love what Emanuel did for Hearns, Moorer, Lewis & Klitschko. His fight with Holy for Bowe, was a tactical masterpiece IMO. Someone like Cus D'amato seemed to work wonders with the total opposite of Manny Stewards students; smaller fighters. Patterson to Tyson. Same with Beristein, more of the finesse fighting Mexican as opposed to the stereo-typical brawler with skills. Who are some trainers that were able to work wonders with different styled fighters? I remember Larry Holmes said Futch was too old & quiet to even hear his instructions. Roach was horrid with Hopkins & Manny Steward sucked with Jermaine Taylor. Another question for the board: Does anyone give credit to Roach for his time with James Toney? I forgot why they parted.
Lou Duva and Don Turner don't belong here, imo. Its Futch/Arcel. imo. Roach is a fine trainer of the present.
Duva: Gatti Whitaker Moorer Lewis Tucker Tua Holyfield Golota Trained under Charley Goldman with Angelo Dundee, both regard Goldman as the greatest trainer ever Turner can say some stupid stuff but his resume is undeniable: Larry Holmes Evander Holyfield Wladmir Klitschko Vitali Klitschko Vasyl Lomachenko Aaron Pryor Michael Grant Mike McCallum Sergei Kovalev
Duva wasn't a trainer, he was a motivator in the corner and often a liability.Benton did the training. What input did Turner have with Holmes? Larry was an ex-champ in his late 30's, all he wanted was someone to rinse his mouthpiece. Turner convinced Holyfield he didnt need a cut man ,that they were a con.Evander duly got cut and Turner couldn't stop the bleeding. Which fight can I see of Wlad's and Vitali's that have Turner in the corner? Ditto Lomachenko and Prior.Turner was the bucket carrier for Kovalev. Turner has stated 1.The pads are bull****. 2. That he was trained by Goldman,[check out the time line.] 3.That it is impossible for a fighter to overtrain. 4. That Mayweather would be a 6 rounder back in his day. 5.That Andre Ward was an average fighter. 6.That Marciano could beat both the Klits by ko in one night. Emmanuel Steward thought he was a bullshitting self promoter.I agree with him. Gatti's trainers. Name: Arturo Gatti Trainers: Hector Roca, Ronnie Shields, James (Buddy) McGirt Moorer's trainer's Name: Michael Moorer Trainers: Emanuel Steward (1988-92), Tony Ayala (vs. Billy Wright), George Benton and Lou Duva (1993), Teddy Atlas (1993-97), Freddie Roach (1997), Isiah Clark and Benny Collins For which fights did Turner train Pryor? McCallum's trainers. Name: Mike McCallum Trainers: George Benton, Eddie Futch, Miguel Diaz Whitaker's trainer Name: Pernell Whitaker Trainers: George Benton and Lou Duva
Like I said, Turner said some stupid stuff. But he's also said some things that I agree with, he's vocal in his opinions and some of them are what we need right now. All of your claims have no backing. Turner trained 20 world champions, provide evidence that he was basically everyone's waterboy. Duva was a trainer too. Let us not forget that Angelo Dundee said that the SHW era would come to an end, and that it's only a phase. So, you gonna admit that as true? Or call him a lunatic, and therefore everything else he does is obsolete, as well?
Show me on Pryor's. McCallum's. Whitaker's Gatti's Moorer's Lomachenko's Vitali's Wlad's Box Rec record the name of Don Turner included in the trainer category ? Don Turner used to take the $1 admittance on the door at Gleason's Gym. Whatever Dundee said about Shvy's has no relevance to this argument whatsoever. We are talking about Turner. I never said he was everyone's waterboy I named a couple for which he fulfilled that capacity It isn't up to me to provide evidence that he WASN'T a trainer of Vitali Wlad Moorer Gatti Loma McCallum Whitaker Pryor It's up to you to provide the evidence that he WAS! I'll wait for it! NB Turner stated the pads were useless bull****. Know who introduced them? Charley Goldman!
Oh hey, you were on this thread https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/how-do-you-rate-the-trainer-don-turner.598864/
You know, some believe that Charley Goldman actually invented padwork. I've also heard it attributed to Dempsey Either way, padwork isn't exactly necessary. The most accurate puncher ever, Joe Louis, didn't do padwork
