The exact two examples I was thinking of.

Fenech might’ve just been wear and tear, but Kovalev was mentally broken after the first Ward decision, and in turn his flaws became more apparent.

 

Fenech is the poster boy.

 

Dave Tiberi...…...in fact he was "never" after being robbed vs toney.

 

With Kovalev Ward, I think it was just that by the second fight, Ward had him figured out. Kovalev, still started stronger, but Ward knew how to get to him, and managed to do it quicker, and I suspect it was more the second fight that really broke him.

Marvin Hagler would never fight again

 

Meldrick Taylor didn’t exactly lose a decision and subsequently his unbeaten record against Julio Cesar Chavez but you could say that he lost that fight because of the decision of the ref to stop the fight with just 2 seconds to go. A fight that he would have been guaranteed to have won if those 2 seconds had elapsed. Maybe he would have never been the same fighter again anyway regardless of the result because he did take a lot of punishment during it but there still that nagging doubt that maybe his career wouldn’t have eventually tailed off the way it did had he been allowed to see out the final 2 seconds of the fight and he had been awarded the decision.

 

I hear this narrative all the time, but I don’t think he was drastically different. He would go on to win his next 5 fights, and looked brilliant against Davis and pretty good against Brown. Then when there was no fight out there for him and he could not secure his rematch with JCC he took the biggest fight out there. Terry Norris. Meldrick looked good for a round but had nothing to make Norris tentative or keep Norris at bay. I believe Norris is what ended Meldrick from being near elite ever again.
