Pulev being a contender shows once again how terrible the division is

he just tonight fought in a final eliminator to face him next you div.
joshua couldn't even KO takam for crying out loud. even a journeyman in chisora ko'd him.

 

Hw wouldn't be beating younf prime guys if he was a spent force. Pulevs styles ages well and he is just as good now as he as when he fought Wlad.. We'll see if AJ beats him witout holding/fouling to beat the band.

Fair point but Rahman as many people pointed out was a spent force at that point and was getting fights off name alone(Pulev and Povetkin smoke that Rahman). I don't think he was a top fighter when he faced Wlad. Briggs got back into the mix due to White Wolf collapsing literally last minute after boxing his ears off. For the record I don't think today's HW era is significantly worse overall but it's certainly not better as some are trying to claim.

 

Excellent point. That's the problem with the proliferation of titles it allows a much lower level of opponent to become a title challenger, I mean guys like Crawford Grimsley, Phil Jackson, Vaughn Bean, Jesse Ferguson all got title shots in the 90's.

You can't just pick random bits of data to confirm your hypothesis you have to use all the data otherwise you're guilty of confirmation bias. This division is more than just Pulev.

 

Its a weird one for me, because the klitschko era was so long a lot of their best opponents all sort of peaked at different times, so we think back at all the best opponents but we forget the likes of:

Pianeta
Leapai
Old Rahman
Thompson 2
Sam Peter 2

So there were periods when nothing much was going on in the division.

I do think atm depth is lacking but I see it being fairly close in quality.

 

Wlads era was so bad hw was regulated to Eurosport Twice.. Imagine AJ on Eurosport? lol!!!!

 

But what did these guys do in their primes?

Pulev got crushed of Wlad, before that his best win was Tony Thompson and he's beaten Chisora since. Other than that he's fought an ancient Sam Peter, Safety Pin, Ustinov and Dimitrenko.

Povetkin has a more solid resume but he was hardly tearing the division apart when he was getting gifts against Marco Huck and being threw around like a ragdoll by Wlad losing by 15 points on all three cards. Facts are that these guys are the same level as they were ten year ago.

Well for sure we could with the injection of younger guys like Dubois,Usyk ect to step up,that said age isn’t as big a deal in the heavyweight division as the others,maybe cause they have power and stamina is often associated with 30 somethings anyway.
It’s clear that AJ and Wilder are the top two guys in the division and I’m reserving judgement on Tyson Fury until I see him v Wilder win or draw he has to look good(lol bloody asking for something there ain’t I)?
From my perspective it only validates just how great Wlad was in long tenure as champ,like him or loathe him he was such a force and so for guys like Pulev and Povetkin there’s no shame in having a loss to Wlad.
Been out all night and was quite shocked at the result as all I could think of was the Pulev that fought Chisora,sure he won that fight easy but he looked so one dimensional though on reflection I guess that’s all he needed to be against Chisora that night.

Many on YouTube at the weigh in mentioned that he looked juiced to the gills though imo that’s just a given anyway.
Without seeing tonight’s performance am I to believe he can beat Joshua and Wilder?

Dino if your reading this do you think the same of Vitali as well?and lastly if you can’t appre ciate or buzz off Wlad last performance against AJ then imo you just hating for hates sake as that Wlad albeit without killer instinct was awesome that night as somehow he managed to cast away the doubts and Emanuel Stewards mind control and did what most champs don’t do in laying it all out there or GKTFO in passing over the torch,pity that AJ took this too literal and ironically has taken on more boring aspects of Wlad and his Steward jab n grab and bore em silly lol.
