I ****ing called it! (i think i actually expected close to 600k) Bet you not a single SHO card in 2019 will top 1mil. The ****tards running SHO and HBO boxing are complete morons. Not saying i am some kind of genius who could do a better job, but it's clear that they have royally ****ed up.
No this doesn't mean Jacobs isn't a draw, nor does it means Eddie Hearn can't promote Jacobs. This just reflects the decline of HBO boxing viewership. Jacobs-Sulecki in April got 900,000. About 1 million is how many watch HBO boxing the last few years. But over the last half year HBO's boxing ratings have been atrocious. Estrada-Orucuta did 420,000. Jacobs only got a bit more because he's not a flyweight. As Peter Nelson said when he announced HBO getting out of boxing, boxing is no longer a significant reason people subscribe to HBO. Boxing fans for good reason have been dumping HBO this year. And since HBO announced they were quitting boxing a lot of the remaining boxing fans surely cancelled HBO. Hundreds of thousands of people who would've watched the fight if they had HBO no longer have HBO.
Oh yeah, I remember somebody yammering about that while I was trying to watch the fight. The World Series of Baseball was on. I don't follow any other sports so I'm always surprised when someone's like "Hey, the Super Bowl is playing." Gets me every year. Probably not a good idea to schedule anything against big draws like that, but since HBO is getting out of the boxing business, I suppose that's precisely where they'd schedule a boxing match, to take the hit so their tv programs don't get hurt.
Boxing is dead in the states. They would rather watch two soccer moms compete in that barbaric mma malarkey.
Greed is what's hurting boxing on pay TV in my opinion. First you must subscribe to HBO at $22 a month. To get a signal in HD will cost an extra $65 a month. The cost of a PPV event is $60. To receive the event in HD costs an extra $10. You can see that over the last decade the majority of the PPV fights have been less than stellar and it just isn't worth the cost to get an event or subscribe to HBO. Add into the mix none of the big name fighters fight more than twice a year. Doesn't take a genius to see that's a formula for failure.
