Watching now and I've been impressed by their surprisingly strong defensive skills. I don't think of either of them as having excellent defensive reflexes, but they had great anticipation and awareness.

That especially surprises people about Pintor, who looks every inch the prototypical Mexican look left hook artist, and we always associate that with pure brawlers. He was a technician.

Not confident in my card at all, and I would almost certainly score some of the rounds differently if I watched them again, but I just scored it a draw. A lot of very close rounds. 7 rounds for Pintor, 6 for Zarate, and 2 even.

I just don't get the outrage. Zarate controlled the pace and space of the fight with his jab and footwork but really didn't actually score much at all most rounds. Considering that Pintor had staggered him twice and gave as good as he received in most of their infighting, I don't understand how he could have been so sure that he had won the fight.

    Round 1: Even
    Round 2: Pintor
Round 3: Zarate (almost scored this even)
    Round 4: Zarate (10-8)
    Round 5: Zarate
    Round 6: Pintor
    Round 7: Zarate
    Round 8: Even?
    Round 9: Pintor
    Round 10: Pintor
    Round 11: Pintor
Round 12: Zarate (Pintor was up but Zarate took it in the second half)
    Round 13: Zarate
    Round 14: Pintor
    Round 15: Pintor

My score from a little over a year ago. Posted in the CST Scorecard Depot thread October 2018.

Carlos Zarate vs Lupe Pintor (June 3, 1979) (15 Rounds for the WBC Bantamweight Title)

Round 1: 10-9 Pintor (nothing in it, Lupe the aggressor, landed a nice hook)
Round 2: 10-9 Pintor (countered well with a hard jab & left hook to the head & body)
Round 3: 10-9 Pintor (beating Zarate to the punch, Carlos trying to open up)
Round 4: 10-8 Zarate (after cagily leading with his head, Carlos lands a straight right left hook combo for the KD)
Round 5: 10-9 Zarate (stunned Pintor a couple times with big shots)
Round 6: 10-9 Pintor (good comeback round for Lupe)
Round 7: 10-9 Zarate (close round, Carlos finished stronger to edge it)
Round 8: 10-9 Pintor (close round, Pintor won the chess match this round)
Round 9: 10-9 Pintor (Zarate just not active enough, when he does engage Lupe beats him to the punch)
Round 10: 10-9 Pintor (more of the same, Lupe staggers Zarate late in the round)
Round 11: 10-9 Zarate (Carlos boxes brilliantly, still a close round)
Round 12: 10-9 Zarate (was Lupe, Carlos comes on strong landing some monster shots to take the round)
Round 13: 10-9 Zarate (boxing and moving, Lupe giving chase)
Round 14: 10-9 Pintor (big round for Lupe, bangs the body staggers Carlos, the champ makes it close)
Round 15: 10-9 Pintor (all Pintor the 1st half of the round, Zarate made the second half close, Lupe looked to have wanted it more)

    My Score: 143-141 Pintor

Great chess match, former stablemates Zarate & Pintor knew each other and their styles well. Not the normal all out Mexican Style war, still a great contest. Lupe Pintor boxed beautifully, Carlos Zarate just wasn't active enough. I could see a draw as well, but it would be tough justifying Zarate the winner of this fight.

Will edit this post after scoring again.

    Round 1: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 2: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 3: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 4: 10-8 Zarate
    Round 5: 10-9 Zarate
    Round 6: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 7: 10-9 Zarate
Round 8: 10-9 Zarate (scored for Pintor last time)
    Round 9: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 10: 10-9 Pintor
Round 11: 10-9 Pintor (scored for Zarate last time)
    Round 12: 10-9 Zarate
    Round 13: 10-9 Zarate
    Round 14: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 15: 10-9 Pintor

    My Score: (143-141 Pintor)

Looks like you had this a draw (143-143?)
