THIS is a great matchup! Ortiz was unbelievably good and of course Arguello is a killer. Either fighter could win.. I can't decide. But I would like a ticket.
Ortiz was a big, strong 135lber with an excellent chin. This would be very close but I have to think that Ortiz could break Arguello down late. I hope people realise that Ortiz was much, much better than Pryor. He’d beat him too.
Ortiz was a great fighter indeed. But Pryor was also. A great Us amateur and a great pro who rose in weight to get his title shot. I have never heard 1 so-called expert or trainer or fighter not acknowledge Aarons greatness. Ever. Why do you didlike and disparage him so through all these years?
I think Ortiz at his best is to much for Arguello, but I think it would be a close brilliant entertaining affair.
This would be a GREAT fight, but for me, Ortiz would win on his versatility. Competitive decision win for Carlos.
What if Ortiz fought Arguello like he did Joe Brown...with the emphasis on footwork and clever evasiveness, like Vilomar Fernandez did?
It's always possible within the context of his career that Ortiz could come into the fight undercooked, over-confident or half-sozzled on hard liquor as he sometimes did, either being run very hard or beaten in an initial fight as in the first Laguna, Ramos and Elorde fights before really settling down to biz in a rematch.
I think Arguello would give most great lightweights in history a hard time (and that includes Duran). I don't see it being anything other than a really tough fight given the pedigree of both fighters but I need to watch more than I have of Ortiz to make a clear call.
It's not often that you'd think it in a fight involving an atg sniper like Arguello but I could see Ortiz being the one of the two whose punches carry more effect over the course of the fight. He didn't have Alexis's one punch power, quite, but was very heavy-handed and accurate and a great combination puncher; his KO record is slightly misleading imo. I do expect that it would be close, high-class and hard-fought for the most part with Carlos having his brain shook a few times, but I'd expect his size and immense strength to give him an edge as well as his versatility and wear Arguello down. Enough to stop him I don't know because he was very durable with great stamina on the home stretch.
