If Bellew wasn't British, i doubt it'd be PPV. And it's a complete myth that you need PPV to pay fighters well
You don't need PPV to pay fighters, unless the fighters' purses are ridiculous, which Bellew & Usyk's purse's won't be.
Think it does 400-500k which probably would be seen as a relative failure. Not sure Usyk brings many in
Without checking I cant even remember who's on the undercard besides Crolla. I don't mind these PPVs as long as they stack the card and not call olympian vs TBA
What do we think would be a success for Wilder Fury? I can see things going either way to be honest. On one hand, you have the intrigue factor. How will Fury react to a massive step up after so long out? Plus Wilder has actually become something of a recognisable name in the UK, albeit largely owing to endless reports of the Joshua fight happening/not happening. And Fury himself is a household name who talks the talk. On the other, Fury's last PPV fight was a horrible advert for the sport which turned many off, and his rematch with Klitschko sold terribly before being pulled. It's a middle of the night fight on a relatively unproven platform; will you really get a big casual sign up on the Saturday or will enough think 'I don't like Fury, I can't be bothered staying up all night, I'll just see the result in the morning?'
What's ridiculous? Let's say they are being paid £2 mil each. That's £4 mil alone just on the main event. The gate will generate what, £2 mil? Now let's say sky would pay £500k for the rights and add international rights fees let's bump it to a £1 mil. So we have £3 mil in a pot without even subtracting the costs yet. This is going to pay all the fighters all the expenses and see matchroom get 20%. I don't see it. Here is a breakdown for Haye v Bellew https://www.balls.ie/boxing/how-much-did-haye-and-bellew-make-360585 Tickets for the heavyweight scrap, which sold out in a matter of seconds back in November, brought in a gate of £2.5m, and and with Eddie Hearn's prediction that the fight would do roughly 600,000 sales reportedly coming to fruition, the pay-per-view numbers alone will amount to £10m. Foreign TV rights (AWE in the States, for example) and sponsorship will rake in a further £1m, bringing the fight's gross earnings to £13.5m. How much did Haye and Bellew make? After costs (Sky's share, staging the event, etc), a whopping £7m is expected to be shared between the two fighters. We've known for the past few weeks that Haye's contract stipulated that he receive 60% of the overall purse to Bellew's 40%. With all of this taken into consideration, Haye is set to earn £4.2m for his part in Saturday's scrap, with Bellew picking up a career-high and potentially life-defining £2.8m Now even if we were to say Bellew and Usyk were getting £1.5 mil each still without PPV the money isnt there as the Gate doesnt generate enough and Sky are not paying multi millions in rights fees. If PPV brings in say £5-7 mil on the weekend how does non ppv replicate this revenue?
All i know is when i'm seeing non-PPV unifications between welterweights, with $3-4m in basic purses for the main event alone, I'll assume the same is feasible over here, but they just choose not to.
Garcia v Thurman saw both get $2 mil guaranteed. The fight drew 16,533 at the Barclays Center which is what say $7 - $10 mil in revenue. Now who paid for the tv slot on CBS. Did CBS/Showtime pay the rights fee or did Hayman pay for the tv slot? I dont know but surely you can see that those purses are only paid from either the fight generating that revenue or Al Haymon and his investment fund paying the fighters.
I would hardly say Bellew is a PPV star, his two fights versus Haye had high numbers because of Haye not Bellew. Is Liam Smith a PPV star because they sold 300k in America versus Canelo?
