Could Max Baer have taken the same amount of punches from M.Tyson as he did from Louis?

He could have imo,whether he would be prepared to is another matter.

 

Some people forget that Baer had a cast iron jaw. If I recall correctly, Louis' knockout of Baer was the first time Baer had been knocked DOWN in his career. And keep in mind that Baer's right hand was broken, and left wrist was sprained. He had no way of defending himself.

Louis is known for destroying people with widely known good chins, so if Tyson took just as long, it wouldn't surprise me one bit. This being said, I do think Tyson hit a slight bit harder than Louis, but Louis was the better puncher.

 

A prime Tyson puts Baer down in the first round and doesn't let up until the fight is stopped (probably in the same round, but maybe in the second). Too fast, powerful, and aggressive. He'd be all over (and around) Baer like the Tasmanian Devil from the Looney Tunes cartoon.

 

Impossible to say really.

Tyson had a shorter reach than Louis, wasn't quite as methodical in his attacks, and was easier to tie up, so Baer might well have prolonged it longer.

Baer had a chin like an anvil, and Louis was always shocked that he withstood his onslaught for as long as he did!

 

Tyson was much more a explosive early rounds fighter than Louis. If Tyson hurt you early in the first ,say ,six rounds ,chances are you was getting KO'd .This is not to say Joe couldn't hurt you and finish it early but Tyson was extremely fast of course. So IMO Mike comes out against THAT version of Baer and stops him even earlier than Louis did .

 

I say Tyson does finish the job sooner. Doesn't mean he hit harder per se, but it feel he'd catch Baer with punches he won't see coming, and those do the most damage.

 

Now that could be debated.

Louis arguable has more impressive early round stoppages than even Tyson.

He could somehow be vicious and technical at the same time.

 

Tyson goes harder early and is extremely aggressive. Louis was always more measured and would turn it on once he hurt a guy. Tyson's starts were almost as if he had a guy reeling when the first bell rang. Tyson is definitely more explosive early by design.

 

That final right hand that finished Baer looked like it would have dropped anyone.

 

This. However, I think Baer would be all wrong for Tyson. I could see Tyson bobbing and weaving straight into an uppercut or straight right. Also, Louis was lighting Baer up on the inside from all angles when he had Baer pinned to the ropes. Tyson can't fight on the inside like that.

Tyson's best bet would be to beat Baer in the middle of the ring, since I see Tyson walking into a bomb trying to take Baer out on the ropes. In the middle of the ring Tyson will have the space to to get his preferred range and land his shots on Baer while also having enough space to slip Baers punches.

 

Baer is far too weak defensively to deal with the heat that Tyson would be bringing him. He's not skilled enough to time Tyson with hard uppercuts, and even if he were he'd probably be too scared and slow to pull it off. Tyson would make Baer look real bad. Baer would be much better off against Marciano or Frazier--guys who were smaller, slower, and less skilled than Tyson.

 

You can't be serious with Baer being afraid of Tyson.. Tillis and James Smith eventually managed to neutralize Tyson's power and were even beating Tyson to the punch on the inside and Baer is far more skilled than either Tillis and Smith ever were.

 

He was allegedly scared of Louis and he'd probably be scared of Tyson too.

I know that you have highly unorthodox views about skills and technique, but there's no way Baer was far more skilled than Tillis. In fact, the opposite is true.

 

Any one else think the whole "Tyson couldn't fight on the inside" thing has gotten grossly overplayed?
