This seems pretty nailed on for me and I don't see an argument against it, I don't think anyone can do anything to topple him in this now tbh. First of he beat Breidis who in most peoples eyes was the no 2 or 3 Cruiserweight in a unification fight. Tough fight in which he edged out in a very enjoyable fight. Next up he beats Murat Gassiev who at the time was definitely ranked number 2. This was a full unification of cruiserweight, the only fighter to do so with four belts plus ring, he dominated this fight and you could make a very sound argument he won it 12-0 on rounds. Last up was his Cruiserweight farewell in stopping Tony Bellew in eight rounds. He was posed some problems early here and lost some rounds but showed why he is THE man at cruiser by showing us how he can adapt, break his man down and brutally stop him. Bellew along with Lebedev was the main omission from Wbss and dropped his belt to fight Haye instead. Usyk this year has: United all four belts Ring champion Cleared out Cruiserweight Won the first ever WBSS Makes an argument to be the GOAT Crusier Makes an argument to end the year at P4P no1 fighter. Without a doubt 2018 was the year of Oleksandr the Great.
I guess you could say Canelo for the GGG victory, but in my mind, that was a robbery, so I am going with Usyk.
Even if it wasn’t a robbery, and it was, ginger wouldn’t be undisputed and wouldn’t have successfully defended all 4 titles. Also, when considering FOTY how such things have been accomplished should matter too so cherrypicking Vegas cashcow with judges in his pocket < warrior willing to go anywhere and face anyone
I agree, but he beat a more proven fighter than anyone Usyk beat this year. Since I think it was a bad performance and a robbery, it is a moot point.
Yeah, he deserves it. The other top 10 p4p guys are just not cutting it. Usyk has been putting that work in. Loma's win over Linares was good but Pedraza is Tank's leftover. Horn is an excellent win but Benavidez Jr resume is lacking. Inoue's win over Payano and McDonnell were devastating, but they're not Gassiev and Briedis. Even though Inoue handled them in 1 round while Usyk struggled and arguably drew against Briedis. Canelo fought once this year, even though the win over GGG is just levels above Gassiev or Briedis, one fight can't cut it for fighter of the year. If you had GGG winning same logic, Canelo is levels above Gassiev and Briedis, plus GGG didn't officially win. Everyone is ducking Spence so unfortunately he won't make it to FOTY. Wins over Porter and Garcia would have made him FOTY though since they're better than Gassiev and Briedis.
Easily, that many back to back fights against such high level competition AND in their backyard - what an insanely brutal year it would be for him... he would have been completely shattered coming into this fight with Bellew and basically made the fight go exactly to plan and stopped him while still looking pretty fresh. Bellew is no joke, doing that to that level of competition after a year like that is mind boggling.
no reasonable person can say the guy who became undisputed on the road shouldn’t be the fighter of the year.
