Are World Champions still allowed to have a return clause in their contracts?

Sugar Ray Robinson always got a rematch after losing the Middleweight Title but by 1978 Leon Spinks was stripped of the WBC Heavyweight Title for agreeing to a rematch with Ali rather than fighting Ken Norton.

Would this be because Ali had not included a return clause in the contract for their first fight or were return clauses not allowed by this time?

Rematch clauses are actually standard in voluntary titlefights, and regularly happen in mandatory fights too if it doesn't end up in pursebids.

The sanctioning body can agree if the mandatory agrees to a step aside fee.
Victor Postol agreed to a step aside fee and fought on the undercard of Garcia-Peterson. Garcia later vacated the belt.
