What is your assessment of Jack Dempsey?

So, another non-entity of an opponent. We agree again. See, we're not that much unalike.

Sure, when plan A and plan B fail, there is always whack 'em in the nuts. I suppose it's better than biting an ear off.

Willard was 107 years old and in his final, ill-advised bout. Hardly a feather in anyone's cap.

Brennan was in his penultimate bout and was soon to be KO'd by a terminal Miske who was unable to eat but needed to pay the bills for his failed auto dealership.

Great stuff, those victories. In the common parlance they are referred to as set-ups.

Yeah, when I said the records are poor, I meant the actual record keeping.

From what I've seen Charlie Mitchell was probably his best opponent. Paddy Ryan was Champion of America, but he won it from a very old Joe Goss in a pretty long fight. Kilrain was a decent win, but once Sullivan was way shot, and I don't think he was really regarded as one of the top heavyweights. Jack Burke, McCaffrey, Dalton (with a win over Dwyer) seem to be some other of his better wins.

 

I have, I've also read reports of the Gus Ruhlin and Yank Kenny fights, I also know he was a sparring partner for James J Jeffries and Tommy Ryan. He was no master technician, but like I said, he was tough and could fight very aggresively.

Raw power, mean as a savage, fast combos and game to battle....he was Tyson in the 1920's

This. I also think he'd clean out the division. Their isn't a tricky guy like Tunney in the heavyweight division.

Anthony Joshua - Too green and still makes too many mistakes for me to see him beating Dempsey. The way Joshua was letting a lazy slob Povetkin work inside would get him killed against Dempsey, who even past prime was a machine compared to Povetkin, who had talent, but was too lazy to ever reach his full potential.

Deontay Wilder - Has the power and the heart, but I see Wilder being completely bamboozled by Dempsey's roll and workrate and see Wilder getting worked over even though I see Wilder as the best heavyweight at the moment.

Tyson Fury - He has the tools to give Dempsey trouble, but his conditioning is too inconsistent for me to back him against Dempsey.

Alexander Povetkin - Had to get a gift when he fought Huck, who was good fighter at the time, but he's no Dempsey.

Dillian Whyte - Too green and has poor conditioning, which would get him stopped against Dempsey. If he ever bothered to get serious and get in proper shape he'd be stopping guys like Parker and maybe even would've beat Joshua instead of gassing out.

Luis Ortiz - This would be a heck of a fight while it last, but Ortiz would gas in the later rounds and get stopped.

Kubrat Pulev - Has no power, no chin, and terrible defense. Dempsey makes quick work of him.

Adam Kownacki - Too green and completely awful conditioning. He wouldn't last long against Dempsey. At 230 lbs this guy could be something, but at 250+ he isn't a threat to any of the champions.

Joseph Parker - Good chin, fast hand, and mediocre skills. He gets destroyed by Dempsey.

Jarrell Miller - Dempsey would have Miller on his back after a couple of rounds. Being 300+ lbs doesn't make you a good fighter.

Product... not champion, not fighter (tho he might have been capable of that), not anything else. A product.

 

He doesn't do sh*t today. When there aren't pushovers like Brennan, Carpentier, Gibbons, Firpo, a sick Miske, the going gets a lot tougher. He wins some, he loses some, likely most. He is in the mix. More importantly his prime is VERY short. No 4 year layoff with starlets and he's tested and damaged every night he enters the ring by guys who are lot bigger and stronger than those he actually faced.

 

If he was around today he'd be cutting down and fighting even smaller guys, if he wants.
Also, he'd have less fights, not more. Andre Ward had 32 fights in 13 years.
