The best Schmeling against: Ezzard Charles (1950) Joe Walcott (1951) Floyd Patterson (1960) Ron Lyle (1976) Gerry Cooney (1982) Tim Witherspoon (1983) Pinklon Thomas (1984) Trevor Berbick (1986) Frank Bruno (1989) Tommy Morrison (1991) Oliver McCall (1994) David Tua (1997) Ike Ibeabuchi (1997) Shannon Briggs (1998) Luis Ortiz (2018) How many does he win?
He wins about all of them. At his best. Witherspoon and Thomas might be the best equipped to beat him. Possibly Ortiz.
At his best, he lost to Sharkey (rematch), Baer and Steve Hamas. I will exclude random losses before that when he was younger. And you are going to make him favourite against 15 of the best non-ATG boxers (most prime) over a timespan of 70 years?
The only person that I would make favorite over him is Frazier, but he probably picks up other losses.
Most people thought he was robbed against Sharkey. I don't think he was at his best when he lost to Hamas. I know he totally destroyed Hamas in the rematch. I'd make him favourite or even against everyone on your list, some of whom are a long way off being "the best non-ATG boxers". He beat Joe Louis. I'm sure you might argue that Joe Louis wasn't much good but I happen to have Louis as one of the very best ever.
Schmeling also sometimes ill trained and not at his best but I think he best mostly everyone on that list. Guys like Tua and others like Cooney have a strong punchers chance but Max was a better fighter Ezzard would be a hard fight for him to win
I think Charles, Walcott and Witherspoon all beat him. Patterson is 50/50. Some of the guys listed are massive hitters he'd definitely lose to at least one if fought in a row majority are much more skilled then Baer and same league power wise.
This is also what this thread is all about. To be honest there is another comparison, but I wanted to get more posts yet.
Schmeling probably wins Zero, if the other fighters are also at their best. Physically he would match up with Charles, Walcott, and Patterson. The rest would be too strong and athletic.
