2017 European Heavyweight champion Viktor Vykhryst from Ukraine is the guy to keep your eyes on. He is very athletic, gifted physically fighter with good all-around skills and great power. Two things he is (or was) lacking are stamina and self confidence. Vykhryst himself said he gained tons of confidence after sparring with heavyweight legend Wladimr Klitschko. As for stamina, it can be improved, as Wlad himself has shown us in the past. As an amateur Vykhryst beat his compatriots Vlad Sirenko (currently 9-0 with 8 KOs as a pro) and Egor Plevako (6-0, 3 KOs). He also KОеd Ali Kyidin (8-0, 7 KOs) in WSB and stopped Sean Turner (12-3, 8 KOs) who went the distance against Hrgovic as a pro. His two biggest setbacks are losses to Joe Joyce (WSB) and Joseph Goodal (World Championship 2017). But Goodall loss was a blatant robbery. As for Joyce's loss, Joe beat him fair and square, knocking him out in the second round. It has to be said though that Vykhryst was very young when he fought Joe, he was 21 or 22 y.o. and he has improved dramatically since then. Vykhryst best win came at the European Championship Final where he beat very, very good UK fighter Frazer Clark. Good fighter. vs Maxim Babanin This content is protected Better quality version of his fight against Clarke who is a very good fighter himself and one to keep an eye on This content is protected Even though JJJ knocked him out it's not like he displayed a bad chin in that loss IMO as JJJ must've clubbed him hard with a least 10-15 heavy shots in about a 90 second period before he eventually hit the canvas and obviously JJJ is very heavy handed. Yes, plus he looked gassed in the second round against Joyce which enabled Joe to land that huge right hand to the temple. He has improved his stamina since then, but it still looks suspect sometimes.
He's solid. I do not view him as a grade A professional prospect. While he did win the European Amateur champions at super heavyweight in 2017, the field was weaker than usual. At age 26, now is the time to go professional. VV gasses to easy, is not that fast, and might not be durable,
Yeah I noticed that too. It's not the first time I've seen a JJJ opponent displaying signs of feeling the pace or gas in the 2nd or 3rd round either. He's not an easy guy to fight with that combination of size, power, stamina and that constant pressure he puts you under.
He will turn pro after 2020 Olympics. I wouldn't question his durability or now since he took some really hard shots from Goodal, Babanin and especially Clark (who is huge puncher) and never looked hurt. Joyce hurt him with a huge right hand to the temple and then finished him with series of bombs. But yes, his stamina looks as the worst part of his game.
If he's 26 now, he'll be 28, likely 29 by the time he turns pro. I do not think the super heavyweight field in the European community is deep right now, but there two A+ prospect in the Jr's moving to the senior's soon that I have an eye on for 2020 and 2024 Russia's Aleksei Dronov. Could be special. A powerhouse with accuracy, and unusually good stamina. Australia's Justis Huni. He's very fast and skilled.
Dronov looks good, although the stoppage in his final fight at the Junior Olympics (vs Damir) was beyond awful. Even worse than Lewis vs Bowe. Hadn't seen Justis Huni yet.
Huni is not what you'd expect. Most successful Samoan heavyweights ( amateurs or pros ) are usually wide and powerful punchers. Huni's got a taller / slim build, and very good speed and skills. Not sure if either Dronov or Huni will be ready by 2020 for the Olympics. I suspect Huni will qualify in the weaker Pacific Island field. Dronov will have to fight a much deeper field in Europe to qualify, but if he does as a teenager it signals he's going to be special. These days super heavies are too big for a teenager to beat grown men...I think.
Vykhryst just beat Russian amateur superheavyweight champion Ivan Veryasov by UD at the European Games. You can see how well coordinated Vykhryst is. for such a big guy. He also feints with his jab very well and has really good footwork. This content is protected
